Everyone knows going into the off-season we need to upgrade the defense and in this particular game you can really look at the end of half hail mary and the poor tackling on the nix TD.

But lets be honest here we could have had the number 1 D playing and still lost. The offense was FAR more to blame here. You put the ball on the ground 3-4-5 times..Jennings should have had a fumble as well, drop the ball at a rate that isn't really acceptable at the NFL level and you will not win. If we fix up the defense and return to top 5 form and the offense comes out like this with 3-4 turn overs expecially in our own side of the field, we will be going home early again.

Last year we had some poor offensive out-puts but we NEVER put the defense in these kind of situations cause Rodgers rarely turns the ball over. If we didn't score points it was usually due to drops but this year we put the ball on the ground ONE game and THAT is why we lose.

The Hail Mary was embarrassing but the D doesn't allow 37 points if the O didn't perform like a highschool team. Rodgers has to be held accountable here because he missed a WIDE OPEN Jennings which would have set the tone early. Then after we got some stops from the D Rodgers on a drive to potentially tie the game misses a WIDE OPEN Finley which would have resulted in a big play and not forced us to go for it on 4th and 5. IMO the offense edges out the defense, in the battle of reasons we lost this game.

You can only rely on the offense to put up 35+ points a game for so long. The one time the defense needed to step up they couldn't deliver.

No one is blaming the defense for this loss. It was a total team failure. The point some of us have been harping on all season is that you cannot rely upon the offense to score over 30 points every game. Sooner or later they are going to come up against a defense that will hold them, and if the defense can't step up in that situation, the team will lose. A high-flying offense can lead to regular season success -- it's happened many times before. Teams in the playoffs, however, tend to have stiff defenses that can contain high-powered offenses. That is when defensive lapses tend to be exposed. During the regular season, a team can shrug off a defeat because it probably won't have that much of an affect. In the playoffs, though, there are no second chances, as quite a few record-setting offenses have found to their sorrow.

Not really asking them to score 35 points here either. Having a bunch of 3 and outs is different than turning the ball over in crucial parts of the field.

Our defense has been suspect all year long. We could have easily been 12-4 or 11-5 this season. Look at weeks: 1, 2, 7, 9, 11, 13, 17 we let all of those teams hang around all game long but our offense luckily pulled it out for us. Week 1 our D saved us against a rookie RB Heisman or not.

We played like crap all around on Sunday but when you're offense is having trouble your defense is supposed to step up and get big stops. We had this last year, but this year it was almost non existent. Last year in the NFCC Rodgers had a bad game but our D kept us alive. When you have a big lead like we did against the Chargers your defense is supposed to continue to completely shut them down not let them make a comeback.

We need to make some changes on both sides of the ball but our D needs an overhaul.

We had THREE lost fumbles, including one where the Giants started at our 3 yard line. It should have probably been FOUR with the Jennings fumble.

We turned it over on downs at the 50 yard line.

We missed two onside kicks, giving them the ball at our 40-45 yard line.

Even with the world's greatest defense, how many teams can expect to win a game like that. You lose by 17 and your only two touchdowns were on drives that probably should have ended earlier due to referee issues. Even if people want this D that is going to hold down the other team, I don't know many D's, if any, that would win a game like that in the current NFL.

The Saints had FIVE turnovers and still almost won the game because Drew Brees turned to a hot flame, not because of the Saints D. Even the mighty 49ers D gave up 472 yards and needed a Alex Smith miracle to win. I just think its a different NFL and its nuts to expect your D to win a game in which the D is given a short field 6 times. I agree, in an ideal world you have the an awesome O and an awesome D but that's hard to do. So yes, in utopia, I want a D that combines the Ravens and the 49ers and a O that combines the Packers and the Pats but in this NFL, I was fine with our team. I'd rather have our team than the 49ers - may be we were just rusty or the emotions with the OC were too much and there was nothing actually wrong with this team in THIS NFL? I think we were good enough to win the Super Bowl but back-to-back is so hard, it was going to be an uphill battle regardless.

No doubt, improve the D and improve the O because that should be what you should be doing every year but I think the loss is causing people to overstate how "bad" this team is. After the beatdown of Chicago on Christmas Day, if you could trade the team for any other team in the NFL, would you do it? May be the Pats because of Bill Belichek alone but that's about it.

However, history tells us that defense wins championships. I wrote up a thread awhile back and it was rare that the SB winner had anything worse than the #6 D in terms of points.

So to win it all, we should really be focusing on D. We were #2 last year (the Steelers were #1). This year, we were #19.

Ideally, I'd like to see that #19 improve by at least 13 slots. It dropped 17 this year.

Guys, you can discuss it all you want, there were flaws in the defense, the offense did not play up to thier potential, special teams did not produce.

But as it is in most NFL games regular season or playoffs, The team that wins the turnover battle, will win the football game.

You give the ball to the other team on your own 35 yd line and on your own 3 yd line, throw in a fluke hail mary at the end of the 1st half, and that pretty much tells the story.

Everyone knew going into this thing that the hardest thing to do in The NFL is to repeat as SB champs.
Tough loss, it's a shame it happened when it did.

Gonna be a long off-season, but I for one am not going to dwell over wht might have been, there will be players and some coaches leaving, will be interesting to see who Ted and Mike bring in to replace them.

As i always do after The packers last game of the season, I step away from everything for awhile, talk to you all sometime in the near future.
I was addicted to The Hokey Pokey, but I turned myself around!
