Video appears to show troops urinating on corpses
By Craig Whitlock

The Marine Corps said Wednesday that it is investigating the origins of a video on the Internet that purports to show Marines in combat gear urinating on the corpses of three Taliban insurgents.

The brief video, which runs for less than a minute, began circulating on Web sites early Wednesday. It depicts four Marines laughing as they relieve themselves while standing over three prostrate bodies.

Warning: the video includes graphic images.

(See below. Inserting the video inside the quote breaks the page table.)

A caption asserts that the Marines are part of a scout sniper team with the 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marines, an infantry unit from Camp Lejeune, N.C. Members of the unit were deployed to Afghanistan last year but returned in September.

Capt. Kendra N. Hardesty, a Marine Corps spokesman, said officials would “fully investigate” the matter but so far have been unable to verify the video’s authenticity or if members of the battalion were involved.

“The actions portrayed are not consistent with our core values and are not indicative of the character of the Marines in our Corps,” she said in a statement.

There was no way to determine independently where the video was filmed or the identities of those involved.

The caption refers to the corpses as “dead Talibans,” but it was unclear if they were civilians or fighters killed after a battle. The bodies are dressed in Afghan-style clothing; the chest of one male corpse appears to be soaked in blood.

Digital videos and photography have become increasingly common on the battlefield and many of the amateur productions wind up on the Internet. On occasion, the trend has caused severe embarrassment for the U.S. military, or in rare cases, such as the Abu Ghraib scandal in Iraq, triggered international controversy and legal action against those involved.

The Pentagon has sent mixed messages on social media, reviewing troops’ blogs for inappropriate content and classified information at the same time as it has encouraged units and commanders to communicate through Facebook. In embracing social media the Pentagon has effectively acknowledged that it simply cannot stop the flood of data and images from the battlefield.

In 2010, members from the 5th Stryker Combat Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division photographed themselves posing with corpses of Afghan civilians who were gunned down by a self-proclaimed “kill team” of rogue soldiers. In that case, however, the Army confiscated hundreds of photographs and successfully kept them out of the public domain for months.

A few were later obtained and published last March by two news magazines -- Rolling Stone and Der Spiegel, a German publication -- but the impact was muted. Unlike the purported video of the Marines, those photos did not depict troops in the act of desecrating corpses.

Craig Whitlock wrote:

Witness America's best and brightest, yo.

It infuriates me no end that I spent two years of my life in that shithole, working 12-, 16-, 20-hour days -- sometimes even going for days on end without a wink of sleep -- trying to repair the damage cretins like these wrought -- while these assholes go and fuck everything up, further stoking hatred and guaranteeing more Americans will get killed.

There are no words to describe how vile I consider these sacks of shit. Why didn't they just throw down a Qu'ran and piss on that too? I hold cocksuckers like this responsible for every unnecessary American life lost due to violating every cultural value these people hold dear.

My guess: This gets buried as fast as possible and no one has to take the consequences.

I'm going to bed. I need to cool off before I do something stupid.

Can't say I'm surprised anything invading soldiers do since seeing the Collateral Damage vid.

We did ears, usually. Go to war and then we'll talk about it, REMF.HELLO-- These are kill or be killed people. What the FUCK do you people think goes on there?

Desecration of the dead is practically a U.S. Marine "calling card". We like to let 'em know the party is over, this ain't the Army they are dealing with.

If absolutely left to our own devices without civillian intervention, I give you even odds you'd be reading some stories about Marine grunts cooking and eating the dead. We roll different than you, we play to win.

I wish I was there so I could piss on them too.

Judas H. Priest... You must now be a politically correct infantryman.

On Iwo Jima, for example, a Marine infantryman would definitely execute his prisoner rather than risk attempting to take him 100 yards to the rear. Shoot him right in the head.

Historical fact. Called the drop kick. Drop him, then kick his unfortunate ass to the side of the trail.

Pissing on dead ones IS practically politically correct, there. These boys were not in the rear with the gear. They "run with the animals". It ain't pretty. Abu Grabass my ass. Those were doggie punks. Just about "your" world, with vet benefits. These are REAL warriors... Charges and assignment of morals you complete non-been-there fucks place upon them be damned.

Don't like it? I suggest you go to Afghanistan and fix it for us. I'll wait for your report on how you accomplished this.

When I see things like this, I can't say I'm surprised. But I do think instead of Grandpa the war vet telling us the stories, now we have YouTube telling the stories. It's one of several things that I think technology has ruined with this whole "instant, now" media stuff.

I'd rather hear about this from war vets, than seeing videos of it.

Except that war vets lie their asses off. War vets tell bald-faced lies without even blinking. I used to be astounded by the sheer boldness of the preposterous lies the guys I deployed with would tell other soldiers and civilians after we got back. I'm not talking about the sometimes unavoidable exaggerations that happen when guys get excited. I'm talking about lies about kills that never happened, injuries that were utter fabrications, slanderous accusations about our enemies that had no basis in fact.

I was talking to an army buddy the other day and he agreed with me: If a war vet's story is amazing, it's probably a lie.

No matter how sincere he looks, if a grizzled vet is holding you spellbound with tales of his adventures in "the shit," take his words with a huge grain of salt.

I prefer knowing the truth.

I don't a storyteller when he admits he's spinning tales and isn't trying to impress me with his supposed heroism.

I really love those old guys who wear the Vietnam War Vet baseball hats but when you ask them where they served, they admit they never even left the States. Talk about resting on other guys' laurels.

beast (8-Aug) : It's a new rule, so it's not clear, but my understanding was that they could be IR'd at any time
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : *had to be IRed at 53
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : beast, I thought the designate return from IR players had to be IR at cutdowns to 53, not before
beast (8-Aug) : It's a brand new rule, either last season or this season, prior, all pre-season IRs were done for the season
beast (8-Aug) : But the Packers would have to use one for their return from IR spots on him, when they cut down to 53.
beast (8-Aug) : I think the NFL recently changed the IR rules, so maybe the season might not be over for OL Glover.
