The franchise tag is not expensive for TEs. I'm guessing he'd make more without the tag. It's really a no brainier. I know he hasn’t had the numbers everybody thought, but he’s still putting up a ridiculously good season for a TE. He is on pace for 57 receptions, 700-plus yards, and 9 TDs. There is no shame in that.

But I don't think Thompson will tag a guy for one year... he'll ether tag and sign (to a multi-year deal) or tag and trade... he's done one of both... he's tagged and traded Corey Williams and he's tagged and signed Ryan Pickett.

I think yes, but there is a sentiment that he won't, so it's a safe course of action.

JerMike may not be putting up huge numbers but he has made some big catches and he has drawn a lot of attention when he runs a route.

How much room does Ted have yet on this years cap? Is there room to get Finley in or does he have to wait?

Also I'm guessing they get Wells contract done first. My guess is he'll be cheaper to sign and I don't think the depth behind him is as good as Finley depth behind him.

He’s on pace for 700 yards and nine TDs, which are impressive statistics for a TE. I don’t think you can downplay those numbers, despite the yardage not living up to lofty expectations. All the NFC East teams spend money and you could look at the Rams possibly being desperate to upgrade the position. Possibly Carolina with the way they use their TEs, though they're already two-deep.

In other words, he'll have his suitors. Never underestimate the desperation of an NFL team. They all don't have Ted Thompson.👍

Looking at the potential UFA's we have, Finley would definitely be the most likely to get tagged since as mentioned above, the TE franchise tag isn't THAT expensive compared to others. I'd say if any player gets an extension first though, it will be Wells. Thompson knows how important it is to keep our receiving group together and continue to develop. James and Jordy got extensions this season and we drafted Cobb who will probably be considered the replacement for Driver since he may very be playing his final season as a Packer.

Doesn't Matthews / Raji's contracts run up next season as well? Also, AR might be asking for a contract extension which could possibly be beneficial for the cap.

Do you consider Jermichael Finley at TE or WR?

But is Finley a tight end? Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Finley could be planning to argue that he’s a wide receiver. The argument would be based on the number of plays in which Finley is lined up wide or in the slot at the snap, either via the initial alignment or after going in motion.

It would be a huge difference. With the projected franchise number for receivers expected to be in the range of $9.5 million, that’s a $4 million gap.
