His nameplate was removed. Above Graham Harrell's locker Sunday was the simple word, "Packers."

That's because after putting together a strong training camp - showing clear, definite improvement - the third-string quarterback didn't earn a spot on the Green Bay Packers' 53-man roster. Again, he's on the practice squad.

Harrell insists that he was not shocked by the team's decision.

"I knew coming in there was a good chance they'd only keep two," Harrell said. "Obviously, I want to stay active. But I'm excited to be here, and it's a great opportunity to learn and develop. It's a great place to be."

For the Packers, the decision to keep Harrell on the practice squad is logical. They wouldn't activate him on game day so there's no use using a roster spot on him.

To them, it was worth gambling that Harrell would clear waivers. He did and the Packers were able to sign him to the practice squad. Green Bay inked eight in all, including receivers Chastin West and Tori Gurley.

When asked whether he had a chance to sign with another team, Harrell chuckled and said, "I don't know."

Whatever the case, for now the plan is for him to stay in Green Bay and continue to mature under Aaron Rodgers and Matt Flynn. This preseason, Harrell completed 33 of 57 passes (57.9%) for 287 yards with two touchdowns and one interception for a passer rating of 75.7.

With Flynn possibly bolting for a starting gig next spring as a free agent, Harrell could be the future No. 2 quarterback. He's staying optimistic.

"There's great coaching and great players," Harrell said. "This is a great place to learn. I'm in a system that lots of teams run in the league. It's a good place to be. I don't think there's a better place as far as coaches and guys to learn from."

Harrell didn't sweat last night out when his future was in limbo. He went to the movies and watched college football.

Rodgers, for one, thinks Harrell deserved to be on the 53-man roster.
