http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/lifestyle/sports/august_2011/18_predict_super_bowl_win_for_new_england_patriots

After a contentious labor dispute between team owners and players that lasted more than 18 weeks, football is back. While the regular season doesn’t begin until September, the New England Patriots are the Super Bowl favorites heading into the 2011 season.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of adults who watch professional football at least once a week finds that 18% believe Tom Brady and the Patriots will be champions of the National Football League this year. Twelve percent (12%) believe the Green Bay Packers will repeat as Super Bowl champs, while 10% say the Pittsburgh Steelers will find redemption after last year’s big game loss. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

Of the other teams named in the survey, the Philadelphia Eagles earn seven percent (7%) of the vote, while the New Orleans Saints earn six percent (6%). The Indianapolis Colts, New York Jets and Atlanta Falcons are picked by fewer than five percent (5%) of fans, while 28% think some other team not named will win the final game. Another 12% aren’t sure.

But when it comes to who fans want to see win the Super Bowl, the race is even closer. The Steelers are the only team that earns double-digit support on this question with 10%. The Packers, Patriots and Saints each earn eight percent (8%) of the vote, while six percent (6%) would like to see the Eagles win their first ever Super Bowl championship.

Again, less than five percent (5%) of fans want to see the Jets, Colts and Falcons win it all this year. Forty-five percent (45%) are pulling for another team not mentioned in the survey.

(Want a free daily e-mail update? If it's in the news, it's in our polls). Rasmussen Reports updates are also available on Twitter or Facebook.

The national survey of 622 Professional Football Fans was conducted on August 18-21, 2011 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 4 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC. See methodology.

Not only are the Patriots the favorites heading into the regular season, they also have the most confident fans. Eighty-seven percent (87%) of adults rooting for the Pats to win it all think the team will do so. Steelers fans are second with 77% who think Pittsburgh will bring home another Lombardi trophy, while 73% of Packers fans are expecting a repeat.

Among fans who tune into the NFL more than once a week, 21% pick the Patriots, while the Steelers and Packers are virtually tied for second.

Twenty-six percent (26%) of men think New England will end the season as champions, but only eight percent (8%) of women agree. Fifteen percent (15%) of women think the Steelers will win.

Much to the relief of football fans the lockout ended before part of the season was lost. Back in June, 70% of football fans thought it was likely the football season would not start on time and 49% thought it was at least somewhat likely there would be no football season at all in 2011. Forty-nine percent (49%) of fans blamed the owners for labor dispute.

This time last year, the Colts and Dallas Cowboys were picked by fans to win the Super Bowl, while just six percent (6%) correctly predicted the Packers would win.

In June, 49% of football fans blamed the team owners in the labor dispute, while 29% blamed the players.

Packers fans are just showing their Midwestern humility while Patriots fans are demonstrating their East Coast arrogance. I've lived in both places.

Hopefully it helps put a chip on their shoulders. Fan polls matter very little in the greater scheme of things.

87.2% of all statistics are made up on the spot. Fact.
I want to go out like my Grandpa did. Peacefully in his sleep.
Not screaming in terror like his passengers.

Eh, phone polls are corrupted by response bias, and therefore don't mean much anyway. Also, I'm not sure how they selected who to call other than "NFL fans", but I imagine there is selection bias here as well.
Fan Shout
packerfanoutwest (3h) : don't care
Zero2Cool (8h) : Lions shopping Jameson Williams?
packerfanoutwest (16h) : Packers General Manager Brian Gutekunst says Green Bay’s roster can win, even without adding anyone in the draft.
Zero2Cool (16h) : It's a poor design. New site has SignalR like our gameday chat
wpr (16h) : Ah today's Shout was very quick to post.
wpr (16h) : now 3
Zero2Cool (17h) : Who? What?
beast (22-Apr) : What is he supposed to say? He doesn't want players currently on the team?
Martha Careful (21-Apr) : meh
Zero2Cool (21-Apr) : Sounds like Walker and Wyatt will be with Packers for beyond 2026
Zero2Cool (21-Apr) : It's so awesome.
Zero2Cool (21-Apr) : new site fan shout post fast
wpr (21-Apr) : Slow posting in Fan shout.

wpr (21-Apr) : Only 4
Zero2Cool (21-Apr) : If only we had a topic to read about and discuss it. That's something new website must have!!!
dfosterf (21-Apr) : Justice Musqueda over at Acme Packing put up an excellent synopsis of the Packers 1st round options this am
wpr (19-Apr) : 5 days
beast (18-Apr) : 6 days
wpr (17-Apr) : 7 days
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : sounds like Packers don't get good compensation, Jaire staying
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Nobody coming up with a keep, but at x amount
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Trade, cut or keep
dfosterf (16-Apr) : that from Jaire
dfosterf (16-Apr) : My guess is the Packers floated the concept of a reworked contract via his agent and agent got a f'
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Yes, and that is why I think Rob worded it how he did. Rather than say "agent"
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Same laws apply. Agent must present such an offer to Jaire. Cannot accept or reject without presenting it
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : I'm thinking that is why Rob worded it how he did.
dfosterf (16-Apr) : The Packers can certainly still make the offer to the agent
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Laws of agency and definition of fiduciary responsibility
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Jaire is open to a reduced contract without Jaire's permission
dfosterf (16-Apr) : The agent would arguably violate the law if he were to tell the Packers
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : That someone ... likely the agent.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : So, Jaire has not been offered nor rejected a pay reduction, but someone says he'd decline.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Demovksy says t was direct communication with someone familiar with Jaire’s line of thinking at that moment.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Demovsky just replied to me a bit ago. Jaire hasn't said it.
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Of course, that depends on the definition of "we"
dfosterf (16-Apr) : We have been told that they haven't because he wouldn't accept it. I submit we don't know that
dfosterf (16-Apr) : What is the downside in making a calculated reduced offer to Jaire?
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Packers are receiving interest in Jaire Alexander but a trade is not imminent
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Jalen Ramsey wants to be traded. He's never happy is he?
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : two 1sts in 2022 and two 2nd's in 2023 and 2024
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Packers had fortunate last three drafts.
dfosterf (15-Apr) : I may have to move
dfosterf (15-Apr) : My wife just told the ancient Japanese sushi dude not enough rice under his fish
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : I think a dozen is what I need
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Go fund me for this purpose just might work. A dozen nurses show up at 1265 to provide mental health assistance.
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Maybe send a crew of Angels to the Packers draft room on draft day.
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : I am the Angel that gets visited.
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Visiting Angels has a pretty good reputation
