Don't shoot the messenger.

Mr. Green must be a lot better than we hope he is.

As usual, Dr. Death and I don't have much objection. Maybe besides Sitton and Finley, we could also lock up Raji or Matthews this year.

Hey Zero, let's discuss this! [grin1]

I mentioned the same reasons in cutting Grant the "surprise cuts" thread.. if they think they can get the same production out of another and save the millions.

I just didn't see the challenger as Nance.. but you keep your best players at the position. I would have guessed Saine.

Personally.. I still think Grant sticks unless someone really pops off here the next two weeks.

Seeing some of the camp battles and the roster numbers.. I am becoming more and more convinced the Flynn is moved here shortly. That is if Harrell shows he can command the offense again and they get some value for Flynn. Conditional pick type situation where it can grow into a high round pick dependent upon some set of parameters such as games started or TD numbers.

Depth chart would be Starks, Green, Nance; not Nance being the starter.

As far as I'm concerned this is preseason overthinking. "Goodness, Grant might not be the same player, what with that poor read on the draw play in week 2 of the preseason!" I won't lie, these sort of prognostications make me actively upset. Cut Ryan Grant? Are you serious? When weighing production against cap space, I'd think that a team like Green Bay would favor the former -- especially considering that saving $4 million does little to help the team NOW.

Also -- why are a team's tailbacks lumped together as though HB and FB are the same friggin' position? Kuhn is a utility back -- he'll be a 3rd down short yardage back, a goalline back, and also a blocking fullback. Quinn Johnson is the old school FB. Starks is the #2 back, Alex Green is a potential 3rd down back. Where does Grant fit in the picture? Oh yeah -- he's the friggin' starter. He's the 1,200 workhorse if-need-be. Only we won't need him to be, because we finally have depth at the position. Grant doesn't suddenly (magically!) lose value because we won a Super Bowl without a prolific run game (nor does he lose value because [...clears throat...] DMITRI FUCKIN' NANCE has done well against backups in the preseason). If last year showed us anything it's that we're a much more potent offense with the presence of any run game.

Finally, I will add that Ryan Grant is an almost perfect stylistic match for the offense. He's a veteran who knows the system and has a history of good production. So, no Tom Silverstein, he won't be cut. For Christ's sake.
William Henderson didn't have to run people over. His preferred method was levitation.

evad04 brings up an excellent point. Why cut Ryan grant NOW? He is due $4 million, which is a perfectly reasonable number for a starting RB(Which he currently is slated to be). He is a FA next year and isn't counting against the cap in 2012 or keeping us from resigning other players. GB is currently about what, 12 or 15 million under the cap? This gives them plenty of room to extend 1 or 2 contracts during the season. Free agency is for all intents and purpose over for this year, there isn't any big splash type moves that GB would possibility make to use the $4 mill cutting grant would save.

Next year, we're likely to see Clifton gone, Driver is fairly likely to be gone, if Starks does well, Grant is unlikely to resign and a few more surprise veterans will likely be gone, this frees up quite a large chunk of cap. That cap space will be used to resign Finley/Sitton/Wells/Jordy if they haven't been extended during the season, and possibly on extensions to Mathews and Raji.

If there was a time to cut Grant, it would have been before he was due $1.75 million dollars, and when that extra cap space could have gone to resigning someone like Jenkins or Brandon Jackson, not now. Now it just makes absolutely no sense, and for what, to keep a developmental project? Get real.

This conversation is a year too early.
