Some quick random one-liner style thoughts:
-I thought Newhouse at RT was a disaster. He looked slow, indecisive, and overall bad. I think he may have picked it up a bit later in the game, but that was probably against lesser talent. All those praises were not noticeable on the field in the slightest to me.
-Didn't get to evaluate Sherrod much as he was switching in and out with Lang and didn't play much period. Looked decent from what I saw though.
-Cobb looked pretty good for his first games. A few routes look pretty lazy but he showed good hands and some decent speed. It's looking like this guy will be a decent player at worst in his first season. Showed nice straight line running on kickoff returns, and some elusiveness on punt returns.
-Pat Lee did not have a good game. He seemed slow, afraid to be a big hitter, and tentative, even against some second and third stringers. If he doesn't improve his level of play quick, I wouldn't be too surprised to see him cut, depending on the health of the other CBs.
-Mike Neal made a few nice plays, especially in the run game. Hard to say much else about him in his limited time.
-The pass rush seemed non-existent with the starters, even during some of our classic MLB crossfire blitzes. The Browns bottled those up easily. I'm sure that will improve with time, but it was a bit disappointing.
-The TEs didn't look impressive too me. The rookies missed a few blocks and dropped a pass. They need many more reps to develop.
-Starks looks explosive, powerful, and showed good vision. It seemed as if they were running the ball more with him in the game than with Grant. Although Grant didn't get many rushing opportunities, Starks definitely looked better. Grant layed some wood on a few plays, but Starks looked like the more fluid and natural RB.
-Harrell looked borderline terrible and showed poor pocket awareness. He held on to the ball for far too long at times and seemed to lock on to his receiver. This kid has a LONG way to go before he is even remotely close to being a mediocre backup QB. I hope his awareness improves over the next couple of games but he seems to be seriously lacking in some of the intangibles needed as an NFL QB. I understand it's just one preseason game, but I'm honestly not expecting much from him, at least not this season.
-Matt Flynn looked average at times and decent with others. I'm not sure how far he could carry a team but in the right system and talent around him he might be a decent QB, perhaps like a Hasselbeck for the past couple of years. He is still a great backup for us should Rodgers miss any time.
-Guy didn't show much but he did make one nice arm tackle on a RB which had to require a lot of strength. Definitely a project though.
-I was impressed with the MLB Smith from App. He seems like a hard nose tackler with good instincts. I think he will be a decent player and makes me feel a little bit better about our MLB depth. I definitely do not want him starting anytime soon, but in a season or two he could be a solid backup.
-It goes without saying that Morgan Burnett played a really good game. He looked fast, reacted quickly, and did not look afraid to make some nice stops in the run game, which has been a big knock on him. If this is how the kid plays, it doesn't surprise me he's basically being given the starting job over Peprah. Him and Collins could be a dangerous group.
-Bush looked mediocre. He missed some tackles and gave up some throws. He looked like the same old Bush to me. Hopefully he's still working the kinks out.
-Kuhn looked in early season form and had a nice run and a pancake block. Gotta love that guy.
-I was surprised to see Driver playing and make a nice catch. He appeared to be limping a bit after his interview, but hopefully he is good to go.
-I read something about Shields having a hip pointer. Any update on that? I wanted to see him get more reps. Same goes for CB House.
-DB Gordy (# 40) made a few nice plays. I doubt he makes the team, but he made a strong case for it tonight.
-None of the WR's beyond the the main 4 and Cobb impressed me, including West. Each appeared below average in every way. I'm sure lack of reps had a lot to do with that.
-The rookie guard with the difficult to spell last name didn't look sharp. It's going to be an uphill battle for him.
-Ricky Elmore looked unimpressive and failed to contain a key 3rd down conversion near the end of the game. I don't see this guy beating out Zombo, Walden, or Jones this season.
-Shakey didn't show much in the return game. Appeared to just be another guy to me. Cobb looked better.
-Rodgers and Jennings looked good today, especially in the second series. The offensive seems a bit rusty, but I expect that to be fully resolved by the start of the season.
-Quinn Johnson failed to make many good blocks tonight despite some hard hits. He hit the guy but didn't seem to get much push.
-The first team defensive played slow and didn't appear to give 100%. Get the lead out boys, we're going to need you.
I'm really looking forward to seeing some of the other players throughout the next 3 weeks.
