Preparing a team for the season in a lockout year was a challenge for every NFL team, the Green Bay Packers included.
Considering all the time and effort he puts into creating a training camp schedule, even coach Mike McCarthy had to call an audible. After two weeks of intense meetings during the days and practice at night, McCarthy is going to a regular-season type schedule, cancelling the three remaining night practices.
"This was an option all along," McCarthy said Thursday night.
The extra meeting time and walk-throughs during the day were created with the rookies in mind since none of them had been exposed to a playbook until two weeks ago. After two weeks of intense training and the full installation of the offensive and defensive schemes, players were starting to show mental fatigue.
McCarthy didn't say he was sorry with the schedule he created, he just said he thought it was time to go into more of a regular-season mode given the Packers open the season three days earlier than normal.
