Sounds like he has taken the correct approach.. acknowledged the issue, studied it, and went out and worked on the issue.

Also, at first I was curious to why they moved Bennett to WR.. I think one aspect was answered below. One also has to believe that Bennett has his sights set on growing his coaching knowledge as a springboard to becoming more than just a position coach.

Should be interesting to see if he can help clean up the drops among all our receivers from top to bottom.

Packers' Jones seeks handle on situation
By Tom Silverstein of the Journal Sentinel

Snip...

The Packers had to look at Jones' issue two ways.

On the one hand, he was dropping clutch passes. On the other, he was consistently getting open deep, often when he drew one-on-one coverage.

When Jones got home, he went back and looked at the tapes of his drops and came to the conclusion that he needed to work on over-the-shoulder catches. So that was the focus of his off-season.

"I was throwing and catching every day, just different kind of throws coming over your shoulder," Jones said. "Sometimes they'll throw them straight, sometimes they'll throw them in the air. But I spent a lot of, lot of, lot of, lot of time working on those catches.

"As a competitor and athlete you don't want to let the same ball keep getting away from you, so you have to work on it if it does."

Jones went home to northern California and went to work catching passes from any quarterback he could find. He worked out with the San Francisco 49ers quarterbacks, his former receivers coach at San Jose State and his former quarterback there who now plays in the Canadian Football League.

Upon his return, Jones started working for the first time under new receivers coach Edgar Bennett. One of the most detailed coaches in the business, Bennett specializes in repetitive drills that strengthen fundamentals and make every action almost routine.

Jones doesn't think concentration was a problem, but Bennett isn't ruling that out and thinks he spotted a common problem with receivers - trying to run too soon after the catch. Bennett is a stickler for making sure his players watch the ball into their hands and his receivers are finding out how serious he is.

"There's certain drills we can use to emphasize those areas," Bennett said. "We'll continue to work on those areas."

So far, Jones has been relegated to standing on the sideline because players who sign free agent contracts aren't eligible to begin practicing until Thursday. Because of that, Jones' attempt to put his drops in the rearview mirror begins now.

"(I want to) come back and be an impact player for this ballclub," Jones said. "Whatever I can do to help this team win."

Makes sense to me. It's pretty clear that the over the shoulder catches were indeed the issue. And that's something that's highly coachable. I don't expect that to be a problem in the future.

I am not surprised about those drops being from those types of catches as he is more of a body catcher than a hands catcher. More often than not I recognize him letting the ball get to his chest, something I don't like to see. Glad he is working on that deficiency. I always enjoy hearing specific things that players are working on versus the generic, "Just trying to get better in any way I can" answer.

Can you imagine the millions of dollars the drops for poss TD passes cost him. Maybe about a million on the contract for each one. If he catches them all it could have been 5 more TDs and he would have had around 1000 yards. That would have made him a pretty dynamic receiver based on opportunties. It's good to see he has been/is working on more sure hands. Correcting drops will make him a real force to contend with.

Over the shoulder catching is different than the ball coming at your mid section. You hold your hands more pinky to pinky than making a triangle with your thumbs an index fingers.

I agree with Zero. I always thought he was more of a hands catcher than a body catcher. He is saying all of the right things, and hopefully he gets that problem cleaned up. I still have to wonder why it wasn't already cleaned up by now, though.

As for Edgar Bennett, I think the move from RB coach to WR coach is an upward move, and I agree that he has bigger things in mind.

I'll 3rd that, everything I've seen has talked in that regard, in fact also talking about him having strong hands. If I were a receiver I would be carrying the ball around tossing and moving it around just to make it a more natural feel and develop muscle memory. It sounds "old school" but I believe it works.

Could be why they moved Edgar Bennett to WR coach. If anybody can help a guy straighten out an issue like that's it's Edgar Bennett. Great coach.
