Which leads me to a question: why do our ex-players want to go to our division rivals and stick it to us so bad? Is it because they love it in GB so much that they are so naturally heartbroken?

if Ted Thompson, the one in the public eye for the most part, deals with the players in the same nature I can see how it may leave some a bit pissed. Ted has an eye for talent, but from all accounts in players dealings, I think he could communicate more effectively... anytime you employ a former white house PR man to help clean the house, well it just doesn't speak well for the information flow inside the walls.
IMO.. it is the veterans that you see this from.. an mainly those that had a strong locker room presence.
This is a business.. and these are grown men that should know that the "turk" eventually comes knocking on everyone's locker at some point.. but it doesn't mean that such moves can't be communicated to these veteran players in a man to man setting and with a bit of a personal touch.
For example.. Cullen has said that the Packers never even discussed a new deal with him.. I probably would be a little jaded as well that the GM couldn't sit down or pull me aside and explain the Packers position in regards to this veteran player.
This is about the only criticism that I can actually hold for Thompson in his era here.. ineffective communication.
