My wife would vote for the Chester Marcol FD block that was turned into a TD. She has always loved that play. I told her I won't vote on her behalf. She has to come in and vote herself.

I'm sorry, but there is nothing gritty about a QB sneak. The circumstances make the play great and I understand that people are going to vote based the circumstance. If that were week eight of the regular season, it would not be an option. I understand that it is an iconic moment in not only Packer history, but also pro football history. At the end of the day, that will trump anything else.

However, I still contest that the drive itself shows the true greatness of the 60s Packers and not the play. The play was icing on the cake. The drive was the core of the Lombardi era. That game was all about the drive and not the play in my opinion, but I recognize that I’m in the very very very small minority. 🤣

Yeah the Starr play in the Ice Bowl was about more than just that one play. That's why it's iconic. Personally, I don't think the Freeman catch was all that great. What made it significant was that 1: it was against the Queens and 2: it was on Monday night. Then again, the Chester Marcol play wasn't that significant either, per se. Nor was the Majik "replay" game. They're just moments that stand out and have become legendary.

If those plays aren't that great, which plays would you replace them with?

Awesome post, PWT36. My aunt was at that game too.

It is the most famous play in the history of the entire NFL.

The Chester Marcol kick stands out for me, because I was 10 years old. I was in my room and I flipped on this old black and white tv that was held together with duct tape. What did I see? THAT play. I was hooked as a Packers fan. But it's not an iconic moment like the Ice Bowl play. That play seems like a distillation of the Lombardi era.
The Freeman play was a great miracle play. But it didn't distill a great dynasty down to it's essence. Neither did the Chester Marcol play or the "instant replay" game.
You might say the instant replay game is iconic in a sense. The Bears had dominated us earlier that decade. Now their time was over. That play galled Ditka so much he had an asterisk put in the game programs next to it. So maybe it was kind of a distillation of the "post Bears" era, signifying that their era was over.
And actually, that was the "miracle '89" season right? It was kind of exciting, because we finally had a QB to replace Lynn Dickey. We had gone through some desperate times, trying to salvage Marc Wilson of the Raiders and Vince Ferragamo. We ended up with Randy Wright. That totally sucked. Majik seemed to come out of nowhere.
So I guess that play sort of marked a turning of the tide, from Bears dominance to an era when the Packers started to come out of that horrible Forrest Gregg era.

Great post, nerdmann. I was about the same age as you when the Chester Marcol play happened, but I honestly don't remember if I saw it live. What stands out for me is listening to my family members (especially my grandma) describe it.

You make a good case for the Majkowski play being iconic. I didn't put it in my top five because it was a questionable call, but it is definitely one of those plays that has been talked about a lot over the years.

For me as a Packer fan from the UK to play has to be The Ice Bowl Sneak .

I remember watching the Freeman catch live and could not believe what I saw, and it rates high in my personal list of Packer memories.

But.

When I finally make it to Lambeau I won't ask "So where was it on the field that Freeman caught the ball lying on his back"

I will ask "Which is the endzone that Starr scored at?"

The Ice bowl is the definitive moment in my opinion for Packer fans the world wide and as such the sneak is the greatest moment.

dfosterf (25-Jun) : Weird question. Very esoteric. For stockholders. Also lengthy. Sorry. Offseason.
