(CNN) The father of Green Bay Packers wide receiver Donald Driver was beaten by Houston, Texas, police officers as they arrested him for outstanding traffic warrants, Drivers family members claimed Wednesday.

Police said Driver was arrested for outstanding traffic warrants and was found to be unresponsive upon his arrival at jail. Paramedics transported him to the hospital, they said. The Houston Police Department said in a written statement it takes the assault allegations very seriously, and will begin a thorough investigation into the matter.

The two officers involved remain on duty pending further investigation, police said. However, relatives and Evans called for the officers involved to be suspended or placed on administrative leave until the investigation is complete.

Horrible. I hope he's ok.

I cannot believe that such police are allowed to remain on duty while being investigated.

How can there be justification of a beating with outstanding traffic warrants? He didn't deserve this even if he resisted arrest. There's a reason why cops have mace and/or tazer.

This is one of those situations where you really need to reserve judgment until all the facts come out.

That story tells us nothing except that Mr Driver was arrested and subsequently transported to the hospital. The Drivers allege that he was beaten. That's all we know, yet some have already indicted the officers in this matter and another has played the race card. Slow down, folks.

EDIT: Ok, the post below tells a much better story. Doesn't look good for HPD.

More details:

Driver's father hospitalized in Houston
By Greg A. Bedard of the Journal Sentinel
Nov. 19, 2008 5:33 p.m. |

Green Bay - Marvin Driver Jr., the father of Green Bay Packers receiver Donald Driver, is in a Houston hospital. His family alleged he was beaten by police.

Both the Driver family and Houston Police Department have differing stories about the incident. Both, however, agree that Mr. Driver was arrested during a traffic stop because of outstanding traffic warrants at 1:30 a.m. Monday and was set to be taken to jail.

The family insists Mr. Driver "never made it to jail" and was picked up by paramedics after he was found lying on the ground bloody and unconscious.

Mr. Driver is now in the hospital and can't speak because of some bleeding on his brain from blunt force trauma, according to the family.

"Mr. Driver Jr. is able to communicate through notes where he has described the torture he went through at the hand of HPD officers," according to the family's statement.

At a press conference Tuesday afternoon, Marvin Driver's family showed photos of Driver in his hospital bed with breathing tubes in his mouth. The family also showed the notes written by Driver that alleged that he knew at least one of the officers and that they took him behind a gas station where they beat him and forced an object down his throat.

Driver's family also alleged that the arresting officers made disparaging remarks about his son.

The police said that Mr. Driver made it to the jail and there he was found to be unresponsive. Mr. Driver was then transported to the hospital.

Houston police said it will investigate the allegations. The two officers involved will remain on duty pending the investigation.

Donald Driver was scheduled to be given Wednesday and Thursday off from practice to heal up some nagging injuries.

Coach Mike McCarthy said Driver has been excused to deal with a "personal situation that has come up." He said further comment would be inappropriate at this time.

Driver is expected back in time for Monday night's game against the New Orleans Saints.

Driver's father was in prison for some of his childhood. Driver has not spoken much of his father in interviews but one story said he had reconnected with his father after the elder Driver got out prison. His father urged him to stay out of trouble and not follow his path.

While Driver spends much of the off-season in Green Bay, he also spends some time in Houston and has worked out with teammates there in the past.

Fellow wide receivers James Jones and Ruvell Martin, along with quarterback Aaron Rodgers had no knowledge of the situation when asked about it after practice.

I will now gladly reserve judgment until all of the facts are out.

He could have missed a court date for a traffic violation or maybe just accumulated unpaid parking tickets, it can mean lots of things including "we had to come up with something"

Some of you just fall for anything that is said!!

1) Let's wait and see if there is any evidence that anyone in law enforcement was involved. They had no reason for a beating without arrest for resisting.

2) Let's not call the man a liar right away just because he was a fugitive from justice with several outstanding warrants.

3) Why bring it up and embarrass Donald?

4) Until all the facts are in don't be playing that worn out race card because it gets you nowhere.

5) A man with outstanding warrants is innocent until proven guilty as is the police department.

6) The burden of proof is on the accuser.

This is very horrible. On the radio they were saying that Donald wasn't particular close with his father, but that doesn't mean it hurts any less.

Hopefully Marvin comes through 100%.
