It isn't like he choked out a bunch of canines or anything; or raped a girl in a bathroom; or was present during a murder. He prefers to get loaded on a codeine concoction versus mary jane or coke. I do think he is mixed up in trafficking as well, but that has yet to be proven. Basically he's guilty of being stupid and and it would appear being addicted to substance abuse.

Don't know if the NFL can/will do anything to suspend him further--this happened during the lockout, so technically it was outside the collective bargaining agreement window. He pled guilty to the earlier charge, which he was already suspended for. The current charges were dropped.

I'm rooting for him, but talk about high risk--any violation of the probaation terms (no drinking, no drugs) for 5 years means prison time.

Packers' Jolly gets probation on drug charges

HOUSTON (AP) -- Green Bay Packers defensive lineman Johnny Jolly pleaded guilty to a drug possession charge Thursday and was sentenced to probation after striking a deal with prosecutors that wipes out a similar charge and spares him any time in prison unless he stumbles again.

Jolly had faced up to 20 years in prison if he had been convicted of possessing at least 200 grams of codeine, a controlled substance, after being arrested outside a Houston club three years ago. He pleaded guilty to the 2008 charge while a drug charge from March, in which he was also accused of possessing codeine, was dropped.

Jolly entered his plea during a brief hearing, in which state District Judge Denise Bradley sentenced him to five years of deferred adjudication, a form of probation that will allow the conviction to be removed from his record if he stays out of trouble.

Bradley also ordered Jolly to undergo drug treatment at an inpatient facility for 90 days, barred him from going to bars or nightclubs and ordered him not to drink or use drugs while he is on probation.

The judge warned Jolly that if he violated any terms of his probation, "I will send you to prison."

Jolly, who has been jailed since his most recent drug arrest in March, said little during the court hearing. After the hearing, defense attorney Carl Moore said he was pleased with the sentence and plea deal.

"I think he's going to get the help he needs," said Moore, who added that Jolly would begin his drug treatment on Monday.

Jolly planned to undergo treatment at a facility in Houston run by former NBA player and coach John Lucas, who was at the court hearing with Jolly's mother.

"To save his life and get him back on track," Lucas said when asked how he planned to help Jolly. "I'm looking forward to helping him."

Lucas, who battled his own drug and alcohol abuse problems, has operated the Houston-based Wellness and Aftercare Program, a substance abuse recovery program for athletes, since 1986.

Prosecutor Todd Keagle did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Jolly attended high school in Houston and played for Texas A&M. He was selected by the Packers in the sixth round of the 2006 draft. The 6-foot-3, 325-pound Jolly, who lives in a Houston suburb, started all 16 games for Green Bay in 2008 and '09.

Jolly's 2008 drug charge came after police said they found cups containing a codeine mixture in Jolly's car after he was arrested in the parking lot of a Houston club. He was suspended by the NFL without pay last season for violating the league's substance abuse policy, and his teammates won the Super Bowl without him.

In March, Jolly was arrested and charged again after a traffic stop. Police said they found a bottle containing 600 grams of codeine under a passenger seat and another bottle containing an unidentified substance.

Moore said Jolly is still hoping he can be reinstated by the NFL and resume his playing career.

DA Todd Keagle told Silverstein that Jolly will enter in-patient treatment at a facility called Right Step. Jolly will be released from custody today and will report to Right Step Monday morning, and should be there for 90 days. If he meets their standards, he will be released.

The thing with Jolly is that I think he has already served his purpose in Green Bay. He covered the collosal F up that is Bustin Harrell, much like KGB did for us when we drafted Jamal Reynolds.

I don't think Jolly is really needed because of what we have in Neal and Wilson; but it would be retarded to just cut him for being stupid. I cut young men that age a lot of slack because of maturity issues. Hell, I have buddies that still get hammered three times a week. This is America, taking your mind to alternate state is done in many ways and by many people. I doubt too many of us haven't indulged.

True, frankly I think the stuff should be legal. Certainly isn't performance enhancing. Still, dude needs to keep his nose clean, given that in fact it IS against the law. He's established a negative pattern.

Now if he gets busted with one last hurrah this weekend; that would be funny. You suppose each member of the Houston PD knows his license plate by heart?

Does anybody think he won't get at least two years suspension for this one?

That would be the longest suspension in recent NFL history, if I'm not mistaken.

I'll take your word for it. But he's already been suspended for an indefinite amount of time which has already added up to a year. Then he goes and gets busted with an even larger amount of the same substance that he got in trouble with last time. Punishment has to be more severe for a second offense, don't you think?

Yeah, that's what I think at first. But then I start thinking about the addict "It's a disease" angle, and that he's about to go into inpatient rehab for 90 days.

Seems like he might be able to play that angle out, assuming he can make Goodell believe that he was using the stuff himself, as opposed to distributing it so he could buy oversized gold chains with dollar sign pendants. Seems like the court bought it in some way, or they would have thrown the book at him for two separate distribution charges instead of giving him probation and court mandated rehab.

If he can make himself out to be a person struggling with an addiction, who just got out of rehab and is walking the straight and narrow, I think he might get the second chance that he hasn't gotten yet, although it's almost more of a third chance now.

Perhaps being around a football team or organization would do him some good. He always seems to be busted in the off-season for something. When he's under the microscope of the team, everything seems all right. I think there is something to that. Maybe the structure helps him.

I have a hard time believing he'll be allowed to play since these next chargers came after his suspension, so I suspect he won't be reinstated. If by chance that he were, I'd consider him. He's hardly the only troublemaker in the NFL or in the Packer locker room for that matter.

Youre talking about 60 guys including practice squad players. I highly doubt Jolly is the only one who has done something illegal. He was just caught. No justification in that, but the locker room is full of characters. That's all I'm saying.

I think best case scenario for Johnny Jolly playing in the NFL is he'll get another X game suspension for 2011. Probably 4-6 with some agenda he has to complete or comply with.

I thought his being suspended the whole year was a bit over the top, but I don't know all of the details.
