On his Twitter account, former Packers public relations director Jeff Blumb said he was hearing through the NFL grapevine that that Packers would be playing the Chicago Bears in the Thursday night opener.

While this is not locked in stone, I wouldn't bet against Blumb's insider knowledge. He has many contacts throughout the NFL and has often been right about such league matters.

So, let's assume that the Packers do open against the Bears.

My question is why?

Certainly that's a great game for Packers and Bears fans and it will draw a large national audience, but if you're NBC wouldn't you want something a little more exciting?

Fans for both sides love seeing their teams slug it out against one another, but for all those others who will be revved up about the start of the season, this could be a big downer. In the three games the two team's played last year, neither team managed more than 21 points in victory or loss and together the average score was 16-12 in favor of the Packers.

I can't see a national television audience staying up late for that one.

The best match-up would be the Packers at Atlanta Falcons in a rematch of the Packers' 48-21 divisional playoff game victory in the Georgia Dome. The Falcons would be foaming at the mouth and the Packers would be set up to be spoilers again.

Now, I understand that the Super Bowl champ gets to open the season at home, so there's no chance the Packers would play the Falcons.

Well, then make it the New Orleans Saints. It would be a marvelous quarterback duel between Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees. That would be a natural for an opening-night game.

Shoot, even the Lions might draw more interest because they appear to be an up-and-coming team with a star receiver and a quarterback who won't yet be hurt (probably).

I have nothing against the Packers-Bears. I enjoyed covering all three of those games last year. But as a season opener? Save their match-ups for December and January.

Sorry blog author, but it SHOULD be Packers v. Bears. Super Bowl champs get to open the season at home, against the best match-up based on last season's success. Packers v. Bears is what makes the most sense (another game on our schedule would be "more exciting"?!?!?). Greatest rivalry in pro sports... rematch of the NFC Championship... seems like the perfect way to open the season.

Personally I enjoy opening the season against the Bears. It feels like we've done it something like 3 of the last 4 years anyway. So "saving their match-ups for December and January" is something that I don't find to be necessary.

Also, division match-ups last year were pushed to the end of the year so no one would sit their starters. Week 17 was all divisional, and some teams had their last 3 games all in division. So assuming that the league will continue this trend, it only makes sense to play division games early as well. That way no team plays 6 division games in 8 weeks or anything crazy like that.

So yeah, I guess what I'm saying is that I starkly oppose the opinion of Tom Silverstein in this particular instance.

Good. I'd rather play da Bears before it gets cold.

It will either be an ugly game with freak plays and miscues leading to a narrow win or loss, or a complete ass whipping by the Packers. Either way, not as good as if we played New Orleans.

1. Packers v. Bears games are often full of weird plays and miscues, and as frustrating as they may be they're still usually pretty epic. Last time we faced 3 different Bears QBs and only won by one score... I'd like to see us prove that we can crush them. Based on last year, this is the game that should happen.

2. Packers v. Saints could just as easily be a blowout. The Saints of late aren't consistent. I don't understand why everyone just knows that this will be a better game.

In the end the NFL should choose what they believe will be the most competitive and exciting game... and personally I think they'd be correct in choosing Packers v. Bears.

To you, maybe, but do you really think anyone outside of Bears and Packers fandom really thinks like that? Bears/Packers games tend to be ugly, low-scoring affairs. That isn't what sells these days. The author makes an excellent point.

Packer/Bear games are too sloppy and not that fun to watch (imagine what it's like for other fans). This isn't just the Packers opener its the entire NFLs season opener. The Saints would probably have been a much more exciting match up to start the year off.

I'm sure that Packers v. Bears and Packers v. Saints will both be exciting games... I also concede that versus the Saints will likely be a less sloppy game. I suppose above all else this match-up just seemed appropriate to me. Either way works though, I guess I'll just have to agree to disagree.

I might prefer to watch a Bears/Packers game, though having the Bears on top of the division and the Packers on bottom after only one game would be frustrating if it happened.

But my perspective as a Packers or Bears fan is beside the point. This is a ratings-driven league, and that matchup probably won't be a marquee pull for the league. It will be interesting from the perspective of being the NFC championship rematch and seeing which team has advanced the most in the offseason. I am just not sure how many other fans think like that.

I'm not so sure I would want to play the Bears straight out, especially if we do come out rusty....not saying we will but wouldn't want to me down a game that soon in the division. Packers v Falcons actually isn't a bad idea in terms of ratings/excitement level for the rest of the NFC as both games were good watches last season.
