We sure do get mentioned as having the "best (x) in the NFL" these days. QB, WRs, secondary... I know sports writers are prone to hyperbole, but damn.

Comes with winning the SB. Lots of bandwagon jumpers. If they fall short this season all these analysts who anointed GB players as being so extraordinaire will bail on them in a heart beat.

How many "experts" are proclaiming the Saints as being elite at most of their positions?

I don't remember this happening after they won the super bowl either (besides WR's), so unless my memory is terrible you just disproved your own point

"wpr" wrote:

Well I do not have any specific articles to reply on but people were slobbering all over Brees. There were a lot of kudos for the Saint's defense. You already mentioned the WRs.
Just about every position other than RB got some kind of love in the past year.
But as I said I can't point to a specific story and I don't care enough to go look either.
If you don't feel New Orleans was puffed up by the media this last year or other SB winners in years prior that is fine with me.

"MassPackersFan" wrote:

Didn't they have like the 20something rated defense that year? I could be wrong but I don't remember their defense being praised for anything but their ability to create turnovers. And I don't remember any (defensive) position being called the best in the league. Anywho, it's whatever.

I consider 2010 Sammy's 'break out' year...

"wpr" wrote:

No way. He had a great season but like the story says he is still raw. He has only been a CB for a couple of years.
Look for him to really up his game in years 3 and 4.

"macbob" wrote:

That's fine. I don't require you to think it one but I do.

With Woodson, Williams, Collins, etc as the alternative targets, I'd have expected Shields to get targeted early and often.

When you consider the expectations and the concerns for that position at the beginning of the year and compare it to the expectations at the end of the year, that's a break out year to me.

I understand. For me a break out year is one where you have a certain level of production for a while (maybe even a slight increase over time) and then the player makes a quantum jump to a new level then plays at that higher level for a number of years.

I read somewhere, if we had 3 Sam Shields back in the secondary, we would be ranked about 14th in the league in opponents QB rating.

Considering he is a nickle back behind Tramon Williams and Charles Woodson, thats pretty impressive. Throw in the fact he is a rookie, it is astounding. Throw in that he was an un-drafted FA that only played CB for one year in college, it starts to sound like a fantasy.

"Dexter_Sinister" wrote:

In a league with 32 teams, 14th is mediocre. I'm not sure if that stat is true or if somebody just pulled it out of their rear end anyway. I prefer stats that actually make our impressive players look impressive. Sam Shields did not just have a great season for a rookie undrafted free agent, he had a great season, period.

That was the thought, but it didn't happen much until the final two regular season games. Joe Buck and Troy Aikman talked about it.

You need to quit sniffing Barry's jockstrap and watch our games more closely. There is still a lot of bump and run coverage being played along with the zone coverages.

Just like some are quick to put down, hey Packers have JerMichael Finley next year, they'll be unstoppable! ... I need to see consistency and reliability first.

Just Imagine this for the next 6-9 years. What a ride it will be 🙂 (PS, Zero should charge for this)

Very astute, same thing happened with Favre and Sharpe, when Sterling went down, the whole offense was opened up and Brett became a 3 time MVP.

It's almost as if the only star player our offense needs is the Quarterback, and the rest just need to do their jobs: run efficient routes, hold on to the ball, and block. The only guy that worries me is Finley - he has ego written all over him.

We put. I was very happy when we signed Shields because of his speed and potential. You can't teach speed, but you can teach technique and scheme. I was hoping in 2-3 years he could contribute and in 3-4 years he would be a decent/good CB. So he is about 3 years ahead of my schedule!

dfosterf (16-Apr) : Trade, cut or keep
dfosterf (16-Apr) : that from Jaire
dfosterf (16-Apr) : My guess is the Packers floated the concept of a reworked contract via his agent and agent got a f'
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Yes, and that is why I think Rob worded it how he did. Rather than say "agent"
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Same laws apply. Agent must present such an offer to Jaire. Cannot accept or reject without presenting it
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : I'm thinking that is why Rob worded it how he did.
dfosterf (16-Apr) : The Packers can certainly still make the offer to the agent
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Laws of agency and definition of fiduciary responsibility
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Jaire is open to a reduced contract without Jaire's permission
dfosterf (16-Apr) : The agent would arguably violate the law if he were to tell the Packers
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : That someone ... likely the agent.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : So, Jaire has not been offered nor rejected a pay reduction, but someone says he'd decline.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Demovksy says t was direct communication with someone familiar with Jaire’s line of thinking at that moment.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Demovsky just replied to me a bit ago. Jaire hasn't said it.
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Of course, that depends on the definition of "we"
dfosterf (16-Apr) : We have been told that they haven't because he wouldn't accept it. I submit we don't know that
dfosterf (16-Apr) : What is the downside in making a calculated reduced offer to Jaire?
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Packers are receiving interest in Jaire Alexander but a trade is not imminent
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Jalen Ramsey wants to be traded. He's never happy is he?
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : two 1sts in 2022 and two 2nd's in 2023 and 2024

dfosterf (14-Apr) : Maybe send a crew of Angels to the Packers draft room on draft day.
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : I am the Angel that gets visited.
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Visiting Angels has a pretty good reputation
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : what
Martha Careful (14-Apr) : WINNING IT, not someone else losing it. The best victory though was re-uniting with his wife
Martha Careful (14-Apr) : The manner in which he won it was just amazing and wonderful. First blowing the lead then getting back, then blowing it. But ultimately
