before the draft some said Hawk should be an MLB in the NFL because he lacks the straight line speed you want in an OLB. Hawk mainly stayed outside because Barnett refused to play anything other than MLB. Maybe Hawk will get his groove on in this position.

Really? Since when has Barnett refused to switch positions? I've heard otherwise and read contradicting statements to that. or so I thought. Please, refresh my memory here.

He might be a little small, but I think MLB is where we might see the real AJ Hawk come to life. He has struggled a bit in the transition to OLB and Chillar certainly has played well in spurts. I would love to see Hawk as MLB and Barnett as the SSLB with Chllar at WSLB - Next season 🙂

Transition to OLB?

Hawk played the outside his entire career at OSU.. some experience at the MLB.

Uh I am almost positive he played mainly inside backer at OSU. I am trying to find out for sure via my good pal google, but pretty sure man.

EDIT- I guess he did play mainly OLB but started off at ILB. I guess when i watched him in college he was every where and seemed like he was the MLB.

Save ya a little time.. Here..

MSN engine must be faster. Off topic.. anything to do with google.. I am not. ;)

Hawk never played in the middle in college at Ohio State and all 41 of his career regular-season NFL games have been played at will. He has rotated through the position during minicamp and training camp practices, however.

"Playing 'mike,' it's different," Hawk said after taking most of the practice snaps Wednesday in the middle. "When it comes down to it, it's all just still football. ... As linebackers, we try to tackle the guy with the ball. So that's my goal."

Same article.. Hawk will don the mike from the sideline as well.

Hawk and Barnett had been the two defensive players with radio headsets in their helmets, so Hawk, who took over the defensive play-calling duties from Barnett after the injury, expects to do so again against the Bears.

I like the move from a season standpoint, but it will give us two guys playing "new" positions for this crucial bears game. I expect some bad plays from missed assigniments/out of position, but I also expect some big plays since it will give the bears a slightly different defense to prepare for (mainly having Poppinga and Chillar in at the same time). Hopefully the good play/bad play ratio will be a mirror image of Bishop's game last week, i.e. 2 to 1. Either way, I expect heaps of over-reaction on the boards.

I recall Barnett saying something like that also. I think it may have been around the time Hawk was drafted, but I don't really remember. The impression I got was that he wasn't willing to give up his MLB spot, or if he did, he's leaving. But maybe times have changed since then with more recent interviews.

Yes Barnett objected to moving out of the middle.. I think it was right around Ted's arrive or MM's... I believe it was his contract year that he was vocal about it.. not wanting his play to be effected by the move.

Barnett with his speed.. would make a hell of a Wil backer.. plus after a little while I truly believe his numbers would reflect the positive effects of moving outside...
