Effectively, no contest is exactly the same as guilty. The only practical difference is you don't have to "publish" -- publically announce, if you will -- your guilt. In most cases, the penalty is the same.

Isn't pleading no contest basically saying you're guilty, but without admitting guilt? That's what a judge told me when I said I didn't know the difference, lol. The best part was, I asked "I don't think I'm guilty, but I don't want to drag this out, what would you plead?" he kind of smiled and said, no contest. I said okay "No Contest your honor". He dropped my fine down to the court costs, plus 20 bucks.
