Last year should have taught people that depth is vitally important. After all that work of building depth, why piss it away on a bunch of trades for one guy.

A guy who could blow out a knee or have an undiagnosed congenital spinal defect, or even just not be able to pick up the pro games and be a bust.

All players are a gamble. You have to manage that risk by not putting all your eggs in one basket. Like Ricky Williams, Herschal Walker and Jay Cutler.
Ted Thompson has proven he can strike it rich in any round of the draft or after.

Looking to trade up is a losing proposition. All the power would lie with the team you seek a trade with. You have to wait for someone looking for trading down and then consider the offer.

Pick value is BS. What would you value the pick we took Matthews with now? The value is in the player you take with that pick, not how high the pick is. I would consider whatever Ted Thompson gave away to get Clay as a bargain, regardless of what the chart says.

I know what you're trying to say and I agree to a certain extent, but Peterson is one of those special prospects. One of those guys like Charles Woodson, Deion Sanders, Champ Bailey. One you know that will succeed and will be a playmaker, or at least a shut down corner, for your team for the next 10 years.

And that's what would make this trade so tempting.

That said, we don't have the ammunition to make this trade. It'd be one of those lop-sided trades that always turns out in the favor of the team that received more of the lower picks and players, anyway.

Think Hershel Walker or Ricky Williams here.

I think it'd take something ridiculous like Aaron Rodgers... Or another elite player on our team plus a pick, or a laundry list of players and picks. None of those options is actually worth it.

If I'd trade up for anyone in that range, it'd be for Von Miller, anyway.

We could also throw in a future pick.
I'd say Ted Thompson is more likely to trade down, but he's done radical things before. He traded way UP to get Clay Matthews. That turned out pretty well.
If the guy is that special, Ted could make a play.

Many GM's prefer to shy away from the top 5 picks because of the salaries they end up paying out. I'm thinking with the new rookie wage scale, the top 5 picks might be at a helluva premium in the future years.

Thanks everyone for your feedback, opinions vary which sometimes make for an interesting thread.

I was just looking at all the players that the Packers have under contract, and the fact there is no way they are going to be able to keep them all.

I do disagree that the players I listed are back-up players, every one of them were starters on The Packers at one time or another, take into the fact that Denver's defense was one of the absolute worst last year... an offer like this will at least make them think about it.

That's all you want to do, make them think about it, maybe they come back with a counter offer and then you see just how far apart the offers are.

I am well aware of Teds history with trades, but IMHO this is a unique year, so many young players stepped up last year, proved they could play in the NFL that I think if ever there was a chance to make a trade like this, it is this year.

Again this only happens if there is a new CBA by draft day, without that it becomes a very boring draft.
I was addicted to The Hokey Pokey, but I turned myself around!

It's been said there is no way the Packers can retain all their players. I say, who is to say they want to? If you're not improving, you're moving backwards. I try to keep that in mind.
