For the balanced attack crowd, note Capers comment toward the end about stopping the run to make the opposing team's offense one-dimensional.

http://www.packers.com/news-and-events/article-1/Stats-tell-the-tale-of-Capers-impact/3f720dcd-09f3-4c06-9454-42178bce7148

INDIANAPOLIS His stats are seldom out of his reach. Even at the scouting combine, they are right by his side.

Packers defensive coordinator Dom Capers, one of the two biggest names of the last 20 years on the defensive side of the ball, is defined by his stats. He believes in their validity. In his mind, they dont lie.

Why have so many teams abandoned the time-honored 4-3 defense and made the move to the 3-4 Capers has helped define?

Look at who the top five defensive teams are, Capers said. Its a copy-cat league and it goes in cycles.

Those top five defenses, by the way, include the Packers, Saints, Jets and Steelers. Four of the leagues top five defenses were in the postseason; two of them were in the Super Bowl.

You want stats? Try these:

In one years time, Capers turned a Steelers defense that was 22nd in points allowed in 1991 to second in the same category in 92.

As head coach of the expansion Carolina Panthers, his defense was eighth in the league in points allowed in the teams inaugural season. A year later, it was number two.

In 1999, he took a Jaguars defense that was 17th in points allowed and 26th in sacks the previous season and made it number one in both categories. By the way, that was in a 4-3 scheme.

As Packers defensive coordinator, Capers took a defense that was 24th in points allowed in 08 and brought it to number seven in 09 and to number two in 10.

Today, the formula for me is you have to have a good quarterback and you have to have a good defense, Capers said.

The Packers, of course, have both, which is largely the reason they are the reigning Super Bowl champions.

Always mindful of statistical trends, Capers has locked onto a new one. Its a Capers original: passer rating differential. Capers points to the plus-41 passer rating the Packers enjoyed in the postseason. Its similar to the passer rating differential the Saints enjoyed the previous season.

The encouraging thing to me is we have a 27-year-old quarterback that went through the playoffs with a 109 passer rating. I just like the formula we have for this football team in this day and age, Capers said.

Yeah, a good quarterback and a strong defense. Capers has a good feeling about holding up his end of the formula.

With 2010 draft picks Mike Neal and Morgan Burnett coming off injured reserve, Capers envisions a Packers defense thatll be even stronger than the one that sacked its way through the NFC last season.

If we get a guy or two in the draft, it would be like having two drafts, Capers said.

Somewhat surprisingly, the Steelers running game poked holes in the Packers defense in the Super Bowl. It might have sounded alarm bells for need on the defensive line.

I felt confident going into the game that we could stop the run. I was concerned in the third quarter when they ran the ball five straight times and went down the field and scored, Capers said.

Scouting combine workouts for defensive linemen will be conducted on Monday at Lucas Oil Stadium. The defensive line crop is thought to be significant.

Ill be interested to watch the workout, Capers said. Its always been we have to stop the run. If we can do that and make it a one-dimensional game, there are a lot of things we can do. If they keep you in second-and-5 all day, you cant use (those blitzes.)

The Packers were 18th in the league against the run in 2010. If theres a facet of the Packers defense that could stand improvement, thats probably it. Another run-stuffer up front might make the Packers even better than the stats say they are.

Uh, really? I seem to remember Mendenhall running 14 times for 63 yards, a whopping 4.5-yard average.

So the Steelers's defense shut down the Packers' running back, despite his notching 4.7 yards per carry, while the Steelers' running back poked holes in the Packers' defense, despite the face he was held to fewer yards per carry.

I find the odd ways sportswriters' minds work endlessly fascinating.

To be fair, it should be noted that Mendenhall was not the only RB who carried the ball for the Steelers. The Steeler RBs carried the ball 19 times for 95 yards, which is a 5.0 average.

That drive in the third, coupled with the loss of Shields and Chuck right before the half had me very worried too. On that drive especially, I'd concede that they most definitely poked holes in our run D. But I think that was mostly due to our defense trying to figure out how to play without Woodson and Shields.

man, typing up that last post got me thinking again. What the Packers were able to do, all year long, absorbing lost player after lost player. And in the Super Bowl, winning despite losing Driver and Woodson, our two emotional and on-field leaders (not to mention losing Shields for a quarter plus).... This team is so good it's scary. And so many of these guys coming back next year. Wow. Be afraid, you 31 other teams, be very afraid.

Capers seemed to dare people to run the ball against his nickel, dime and psycho packages.

Teams were mildly successful against the run D but couldn't sustain drives because we shut down the passing game. They produced a few rushing yards but failed to put up points. Which is the only thing that really matters.

Nah uh! Defenses are ranked by how many yards they give up, so that's what really matters!

Yes this is one thing I noticed in 2010. In 2009 it was very hard to run against the packers D, they were shutting down the run and daring teams to pass on them, and well, it didn't work out very well. In 2010 they sold out to stop the pass, and their numbers against the run dropped, but they were still a pretty good team against the run, and points against and passing production dropped a huge amount. I'll take that result any day. What use is a top 5 rushing D if you can't stop the pass? I'd rather have a top 5 passing D and a top 10/15 rushing D.

Our rush d was ranked 28th in the NFL allowing 4.7 ypc. In 2009 we were first, allowing only 3.6 ypc.

True. Redman and Moore carried the ball 5 times for 32 yards, and Roethlisberger rushed 4 times for 31 yards. I don't put much stock in the latter, however. Quarterback rushing figures tend to be inflated, since most of their rushes come in protection breakdowns, when the defenses aren't in position to defend the run.
