Ted Thompson tries to quiet Matt Flynn trade speculation

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on February 25, 2011, 11:43 AM EST

Matt Flynns solid effort against the Patriots late last season has a lot of folks wondering if the Packers backup quarterback could be traded this offseason. (If trades are allowed.)

Packers G.M. Ted Thompson did his best Friday to slow down that speculation.

People are trying to get ahead of themselves, saying this is the logical next step. Thats not necessarily the logical next step. Hes on our team, Thompson said.

Thompson is never going to give away too much in a press conference setting. But he seemed to indicate that the team has no plans to deal Flynn at this stage. That is different than Eagles G.M. Howie Roseman, who indicated Thursday that trading Kevin Kolb is a possibility. (Of course, Thompson could just be driving up the price.)

[Flynn's] future is to be on our team. Thats our plan right now, Thompson said.

The guy looked very good against the Pats.

Matty will be a starter in the NFL. Of course it will not be with the Packers.

I think he would be more dispensable and possible trade bait if Aaron had not suffered two concussions this last year.

I would hang on to him.

Yeah the net gain doesn't seem to be there when I think of the possible trade scenarios.

1. We trade him for 2nd or 3rd round pick, and then draft another QB to develop in the middle rounds.

2. We keep him and use a middle round pick on another position.

3. We use him as bait to move up in the draft for a player we really like.

I think the last option makes the most sense. Although whenever he becomes a free agent, I'm sure he'll want a chance to start and bolt. Might be worth it to get something for him now while we still can.

This. I want to keep Flynn until our OL becomes elite. We might have to pay him. Flynn can put up points, and the job of the QB is to put points on the board (and yes, NSD, not turn the ball over too).

This is why I said don't be suprised if Ted Thompson drafted a QB.
While you are scratching your head Ted is envisioning the team 3 years from now.

Flynn is in the final year of a 4 year deal. As a 7th round pick he has already brought value to the team. What can happen?

1) Flynn signs an entesnsion and remains a valuable back up QB.
Ted can trade him, later.

2) Next year Flynn signs elsewhere next offseason depending on free agency rules. Ted gets a compensatory pick which is more than he paid for Flynn.

3) Ted trades him to a QB starved team this year.

There are a lot of factors Flynn's attitude, compensatory picks in CBA, how trades are handled under the cap if there is a cap, how good are the offers.

Ted is right is is too early to discuss it, but having a 7th rounder produce for a few years and then becoming a 1st rounder sure helps building a team.

I wouldn't be shocked to see Flynn franchised and traded next year. This might sound nuts, but isn't that what happened with Cassel?

Yes, but Cassel had played an entire season. I can't imagine Flynn being franchised unless he ends up playing a similar amount of time and playing even better than he did against the Patriots.

I admit that I was less impressed by Flynn than most other Packer fans were. He struck me as a very efficient short range passer, but lacking the arm strength to be a top-tier or even second-tier QB. I think he could be an average QB, which some teams would be happy to have. I just don't see him commanding a high price unless he gets to play a lot more, and he shows improvement.

With Rodgers having two head injuries last year it would be really nice to have a vet back-up. And Flynn knows the system and the players...

Of course if someone offers a 2nd round for him then maybe trade him. #rd round think about it. And the Packers might be able to grab a vet back-up QB from FA.

To be honest I was less impressed with Flynn than other seems to be. Flynn had problems putting his deep ball on target and wasn't ready for the 2 minute drill/calls and wasn't ready to run the team. And MM ran the ball a lot more than normal and the running game helped a lot. He has upside and I could see him becoming a Jeff Garcia type but I'm not sure about franchise QB.

GB keeps Flynn. They need a solid backup QB. The only way they trade him is if they feel Harrell or a rookie is good enough to run the team if ARod goes down. And I don't see that happening this year.
