Interesting point, Greg. I think a comment by Gregg Easterbrook is apropos here:

And a fumble returned for a touchdown has great impact. But football players and coaches know that fumbles occur largely by chance -- even the best players fumble -- but an interception returned for a touchdown signals a breakdown of performance and tactics. The quarterback should not put the ball where it can be intercepted. The coaches should not draw up plays that are vulnerable not just to interceptions but to the intercepting player having an open field. A fumble returned for a touchdown might only mean bad luck; an interception-return touchdown always means a serious screw-up by the offense.

That is a nice quote there from Easterbrook. I don't usually get too down on a player for fumbling, as long as it's not a chronic thing and he wasn't being careless with the ball. With Jones, it's a legitimate issue because he has big-time ball security issues with all of the drops. But that particular fumble, I thought, was mostly just an exceptional play by Brian Urlacher.

Franchise tag applied to Jenkins and the next priority is Jones.

I think I've read the NFL has asked teams to not use the tags... because they don't have the FA details worked out yet.

But I think bring back Jenkins, Colledge and Jones are a must. Bringing everyone back would be nice. For the right price of course.

Well.. the Union and NFL can't agree even here.. one side says they are valid.. the other.. not.

Come March 4th, depending on the NFL's choice of 3 options.. will tell much.

I am betting that the franchise tag is retained is it the only mechanism that protects the club from NBA situations like LeBron and Melo.

Thompson has to look inside himself and decide on one of two things now. Does he stay with the philosophy he has used in the past or does he now make some adjustments.

The goal of any GM is to build a quality roster that can contend for the SB. Ted Thompson has obviously done that by not overpaying but keeping the core players that make up the roster. This may put him in somewhat of a quandry in regards to decisions he must make soon concerning guys like Jenkins and J. Jones.

I think the team would slip without these two. The question is how much would they slip and what is it worth to keep them. Ted Thompson has the luxury of having some good players that are not costing much at the moment when you look at Shields, Zombo, Weldon, and Starks. Obviously at some point he will want to address some of those contracts if they continue to produce at a higher level than their contracts command but for the time being he definately has a few more chips on the table to play with.

Also, if the negotiations go the way I suspect there will be a rookie pay scale put in place and these crazy numbers put out there for guys that haven't played an NFL game yet will be brought in line.

Does this mean now might be the time to go a little over the budget to sustain the roster with some key resigns? I don't know. It will be interesting to see how Ted Thompson views all these moving parts and how he decides to move forward.

As for James Jones, his agent probably went grey after the Chicago MNF game, then bald after Philly and the SB. Those drops/fumbles probably cost him millions.

I don't think there's a lot of shame for a WR having the ball punched out on a blindside hit by Brian Urlacher. But yes, the drops against Philly and Pittsburgh (as well as some regular season opponents) had to be pretty damaging to his value.

With all the drops he has had I would be amazed if he got an offer anywhere as a starter. I think he comes back to the Pack if he agrees to a reasonable deal. They may spend the offseason "grooming" him.
