Fwiw, I also took exception to the way he (the article) threw in 'world class'. Sounded somewhat derogatory to me. Remember, that it my 'opinion'. ::roll:

I don't feel compelled necessarily for a more precise definition. I just don't consider "Really" followed by a couple dozen question marks to be a valid counterargument. It doesn't support the position, and at the very least it doesn't tell anyone else why the person takes issue with it. If someone is going to question a statement, the burden of proof is on him to challenge it. Packfaninbucland's stance is that an appearance in the big dance equates to world class quality. That's fine; I just think there are a number of holes that can be punched in such a definition.

No matter what, I couldn't have considered the Seahawks world class, even if they had made the final round. It would have just reminded me of a few cliches

So you believe that if the Packers were pitted against, say, the Patriots or Falcons, they would win a majority of times?

I think you're ignoring a lot of contextual aspects -- not to mention a certain measure of luck -- in making your sweeping statements.

The 2010 Packers ARE world class. They will be playing the Steelers in two weeks to decide which team is the best in the world. Win OR lose, they are world class.

They are in the SUPER BOWL (!!!!!!) with 16 players on IR.

They have accomplished this year what NO OTHER TEAM IN THE SUPER BOWL ERA has accomplished, and only 3 teams have accomplished since 1942--they have never trailed by more than 7 points at any time throughout the season, win or lose. edit: And that includes the 2007 New England Patriots, who dropped behind New York by 12 pts in their opening season game before rallying to win.

http://www.pro-football-reference.com/blog/?p=8534

Green Bay's six losses were by a combined total of 21 pts. The Seahawks? Their 10 losses AVERAGED 21 pts per loss.

Are they perfect? No. They have issues. Are they the best team ever? No. But are they world class??? ABSOLUTELY.

And to answer your question, yes I do think they'd beat the Patriots and the Falcons a majority of the time. We almost beat the Patriots in their own stadium with the #1 QB standing on the sidelines, while accumulating a 40-20 min time of possession advantage. And we DID beat the Falcons in their own stadium after they had two weeks to rest and prepare for the game. Given this team, this year, I think we'd beat them like a drum.

+1, especially for the part of never trailing by more than 7 points. That's pretty ***** amazing. :thumbright:

But the point is they didn't make it because they're not world class. If they had made it it would have been more surprising than the Packers being champions and they would definitely deserve the world class label. Whatever the hell this "world class" label means. I also hate how the "National" Football League names it's top team the "World" Champions. I understand it I just dislike it.

Agreed. I'll never like the "world champions" label until the NFL actually plays for a world championship against at least one other league. The logistics of such a match might be nightmarish, but they manage the feat every four years for soccer.

To me, whoever wins the Super Bowl this year will be league champions. I don't think that lowers the accomplishment in any way.

The record doesn't determine how good you are. If it did, we wouldn't have beaten the #1, #2 and the #3 seeds... on the road.

I may not be the brightest knife in the drawer, but that sounds like world class to me.

It goes both ways, though. Both the #2 and #1 seeds had beaten this team previously, and the #3 seed staged a nearly successful comeback early in the season too.

I think this is a great team. I'm just pointing out that while it may well be able to beat any team in the league, it's also able to lose to any team in the league.

It's too easy to say things like, "this team beat this team, so we'll beat them." We are in the Super Bowl but we were beaten by the Redskins and the Lions. The Saints beat the Falcons, but lost to the Seahawks. The Patriots were a favorite to make the Super Bowl, but they were destroyed by Hillis and the Browns.
