I don't have the best memory, so I don't clearly remember this play...but I don't remember any press on this subject either. I do remember making a post on the subject of how the home team has a distinct advantage on replay challenges.

Anyway...

If you remember the first time the Green Bay Packers played the Atlanta Falcons this season, youll remember coach Mike McCarthy not challenging a fourth-and-3 catch by Falcons tight end Tony Gonzales.

The replay showed Gonzales didnt make the catch, but the televisions in the Georgia Dome were delayed at least 15 seconds and the Packers coaches werent able to see the replay before the next play took place. Hence, the Packers didnt have the proper information and no challenge occurred.

The Falcons went on to score a touchdown on the drive and win the game 20-17.

On Monday, McCarthy revealed the Packers brought the issue to the attention of the league office.

Whether its the direct TV feed, or if its the direct feed from the network, or exactly what it is, I dont know if its by stadium. I know Ted Thompson and Russ Ball, our vice president of football operations, have looked into that specific situation after what occurred in Atlanta, McCarthy said. But were worried about lining up and playing. The technical part of it really in our view is not going to affect the outcome of this game.

If the NFL is aware of the problem you can bet theyve made Atlanta straighten their shit out.

The problem is that it isn't against the rules.

ESPN- Seifert

I was in transit for a good part of Monday and didn't get a chance to review Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy's news conference transcript until Tuesday morning. But even now, it's worth noting that McCarthy did not allow a controversial series of events to go unaddressed following the Packers' Nov. 28 loss to the Atlanta Falcons at the Georgia Dome.

As we discussed in a Dirty Laundry post at the time, the NFL acknowledged that Falcons tight end Tony Gonzalez should not have been credited with a reception on a key fourth-down play in the second quarter. Replays clearly showed the ball hitting the ground before Gonzalez gained full control, but McCarthy did not challenge the ruling because the replay was not visible on the Georgia Dome's internal television feed until after the next play began.

Here's what McCarthy said about the issue Monday when asked if he was aware of different delays at various stadiums:

"That's a great question. I don't have the answer to that. Whether it's the direct TV feed, or if it's the direct feed from the network, or exactly what it is. I don't know if it's by stadium. I know [general manager] Ted Thompson and Russ Ball, our vice president of football operations, have looked into that specific situation after what occurred in Atlanta. But we're worried about lining up and playing. The technical part of it really in our view is not going to affect the outcome of this game."

It's true. I've been in NFL press boxes with televisions on the wall that are almost in sync with what I'm seeing live on the field. I've been in others where you can watch a play, write down some notes, and then look at the television to watch the play again "live." The assistants who monitor replays to advise coaches on challenge decisions are watching the same feed.

The implication, of course, is that the Falcons benefit from the delay at the Georgia Dome by limiting the opportunities of opponents to review officiating decisions and potentially challenge them. If there is a questionable call involving the Falcons, stadium operators immediately show the replay on the stadium scoreboard, bypassing the internal televisions, as a friendly aid to coach Mike Smith.

I'm not sure if Thompson or Ball found any evidence of intent there, but even if there was, it would be well within NFL rules and part of the built-in "strategy" to the league's challenge system. I've made my thoughts clear on that element a few (hundred) times, and to me it's a legitimate issue when you consider the Falcons were 7-1 at home this season are 19-5 there in the past three seasons. Hopefully for everyone it won't come into play in Saturday night's divisional playoff. After all we've discussed about it this season, do we really want a playoff game being decided by a competitive advantage within the replay system?

I think they should have one of us on a cell phone to the coach to let him know if they should challenge. :tongue3:

I've made the same suggestion in the past, Foster. The problem is it's against league rules for a coach to be on his cell phone on the sidelines. I don't know if there is a similar rule governing assistants in the box upstairs, however. I think having someone watching the live network feed while maintaining a connection to the assistants would be a great idea.

The NFL addresses issues such as the kind and length of socks the players wear. They can not let the home team video crew dictate when the visiting team watches a replay.

I recall that play very well. Just like my fellow fans who remember it, I was yelling at the television when the next snap happened, making it a moot point. I suppose this evens it out for us when considering the overturned Shiancoe TD was very questionable during the week 8 meeting.

I was responding to wpr, Pete. The NFL does let the home team video crew dictate when the visiting team watches a replay.

I liked the line that said something about if you see McCarthy and Thompson running long cables from the FOX truck, you'll know why.

beast (21-Dec) : Well even if you weren't positive towards a guy, you wouldn't nessarily want to tell the media that (if they don't know about it)
Martha Careful (21-Dec) : I think MLF want Love to look past the end half issues, and feel good about his play. Our coaches generally keep a very positive tone.
beast (21-Dec) : I think a great running game will do that for most QBs
packerfanoutwest (21-Dec) : Coach Matt LaFleur has said quarterback Jordan Love is playing the best football of his career.
beast (21-Dec) : Oh, that's how you keep beating buckeye, with cheating
Zero2Cool (20-Dec) : There is a rule that if your name starts with 'b' you lose 15 points. Hey, I don't make the rules, I just enforce them!
wpr (20-Dec) : and then there is Beast. Running away with it all.
beast (20-Dec) : As of tonight, 3 way tie for 2nd in Pick'em, that battle is interesting!
beast (20-Dec) : Lions vs Vikings could be the main last game as it could determine division winners or #1 vs #2 seed
Mucky Tundra (20-Dec) : Or if KC needs to win for the #1 seed
Mucky Tundra (20-Dec) : Right now it looks like the only prime worthy games are Det-Minny and KC-Denver (if Denver can clinch a wild card spot)
Mucky Tundra (20-Dec) : The entirety of week 18 being listed as flex is weird
Zero2Cool (19-Dec) : Matt LaFleur today says unequivocally "Ted Thompson had nothing to do with the drafting of Jordan Love."
Zero2Cool (19-Dec) : Apparently, the editing is what pieces comments together. That Ted thing ... fake news.
Zero2Cool (19-Dec) : LaFleur "opportunity that Ted Thompson thought was too good to pass up"
Zero2Cool (19-Dec) : Jordan Love pick was Ted Thompson's idea.
Mucky Tundra (19-Dec) : Kyle Shanahan on signing De'Vondre Campbell as a FA last offseason: “We obviously made a mistake.”
packerfanoutwest (19-Dec) : Alexander’s last season with GB
Martha Careful (18-Dec) : if I were a professional athlete, I would probably look to see who the agent is for Kirk Cousins and then use him

Mucky Tundra (18-Dec) : The real lie is how beast capitalized his name in his message while it's normally spelled with
packerfanoutwest (18-Dec) : haha that's a lie
beast (17-Dec) : Despite what lies other might tell, Beast didn't hate the Winter Warnings, it felt refreshing to Beast for some reason.
Zero2Cool (17-Dec) : whiteout uniforms in general are pretty lame and weak. NFL greed at it's worst
Martha Careful (17-Dec) : The Viking uniforms, the whiteout uniforms specifically absolutely suck
beast (17-Dec) : Thanks Zero2Cool, looks a lot better now
beast (17-Dec) : Seems like someone has a crush on me, can't stop talking about me
Zero2Cool (17-Dec) : Should be gooder now. The forum default theme went to goofy land.
Zero2Cool (17-Dec) : What the hell
packerfanoutwest (17-Dec) : yeah beast hates the Winter Warning Unies
Mucky Tundra (16-Dec) : Okay I'm glad to know it's not just something happening to me lol
Mucky Tundra (16-Dec) : Zero, did you copy the Packers uniforms from last night and white out the board?
beast (16-Dec) : Oh crap, is the board going to the Winter Warning Uniforms too?!? It's all white on white right now!
Zero2Cool (16-Dec) : WR Odell Beckham Jr is officially a free agent after clearing waivers.
Zero2Cool (16-Dec) : Packers are 6th in sacks.
Zero2Cool (16-Dec) : RB David Montgomery will undergo season-ending knee surgery.
