Brandon Jackson can hit the friggin' trail after this year and I will not breathe hard about it at all. He'll probably miss the GD trail and hit a tree instead, but you know what I mean.

What a bust for a 2nd round RB, imo

That is the devilish detail I'm feelin'-- And anybody that doesn't think injuries are an excuse is nuts...also imo

I miss either Grant or the Grant-like (or better) production from the position. Grant-like-production is my personal minimum acceptable standard without having to start advocating change.

Starks might have "it".

That is a vast improvement over what I saw from Jackson in 2007. I knew he didn't have "it" right away, wanted to be wrong, and wasn't.

Jackson's inability (Along with our shit-box line--Cliffy to pro bowl, what a sad friggin' joke THAT is) is a large part of what has held back this offense ... It is such an enormous credit to Aaron Rodgers (especially--WR's also) that we even have a credible offense at all.

Unless we find better pass blocking RB, I don't see Jackson going anywhere.

What a bust for a 2nd round RB, imo

How is he a bust, because he didn't lead the league in rushing yards? The guy was second to last pick of the 2nd round, what did you expect? A featured back?

We sure tend to get carried away with the "bust" label.

Jackson is very good receiving threat out of the backfield, and good on third downs and not to mention he's our best RB on blitz pick up.

Now that is out there, I wouldn't bat an eye of he was replaced. I'd like for our 3rd down back to have the potential to PUSH for the featured back. Not sure if that makes sense, but I've thought of a 3rd down back as one who was being groomed for taking over the featured spot at some point.

The 2nd round is typically the first round for running backs... They are pretty much a "commodity" pick.

From way back in July-

Jersey Al on Brandon Jackson

by Al Bracco | July 23rd, 2010
My Postulate: Brandon Jackson has not done enough to just be handed a spot on the Green Bay Packers 2010 roster.

Everywhere I look, I see Ryan Grant and Brandon Jackson mentioned as the two locks at the running back spot for the Packers. I say, not so fast

This started out innocently enough as a look at the battle for the last running back spot on the Packers (that will be coming soon), but soon diverted into a full-fledged disparagement of Brandon Jackson. See, I admit it.

Now certainly, I can be fickle. There are certain things I expect from players at certain positions. Pretty key for a running back is to be productive when he gets the ball. Even though Ryan Grant doesnt fit my perfect running back mold, Ill never deny that hes been productive and has done a good job for the Packers.

As for Jackson, his failures as a productive ground gainer and as a receiver are disturbing. One would think he would be perfect for the screen game, yet, with a few exceptions, he has mostly struggled there.

This past season, he contributed to the team in just one significant way pass blocking. I know this, of course, because Ive seen many a sportswriter or blogger proclaim Jackson as having done a great job in pass protection last season. So it must be true, right?

Well, Im not ready to anoint Jackson as a great pass blocker. He certainly made huge strides last season to become a dependable pass blocker. But listening to most writers and fans speak, youd think this guy was lights out every time.

Ive been spending some time e-watching last seasons games, and heres what Ive seen. In situations where hes been able to square up to the defender, he has dug in and held his ground very well. On plays where he had to go find a rusher or extend his body to block someone, not so good.

In the meantime, hes been a disappointment as a running back, as a receiver and on special teams. If Im the Packers, I work extra hard with James Starks, Kregg Lumpkin and even Quinn Porter on pass-blocking . If they can be satisfied with one of those three in that role, then theres really no reason to keep Jackson, since any of those three are all more versatile than Jackson (whether Porter can make the jump from Div II remains to be seen).

As a former second-rounder, there should be some trade value for Jackson if another team is hit by injury during training camp and needs an experienced running back.

And no folks, this isnt just a veiled attempt by me to find a way to get Kregg Lumpkin on the roster. Ive felt this way about Jackson for about a season and a half.

I understand the value of pass blocking skills at that position, and Lord knows, a primary goal this season needs to be to keep Aaron Rodgers off his backside as much as possible. But remember, Jackson was no pass-blocking phenom his first two years. It was a skill he learned. If he could learn it, so could someone else.

If that were to happen, then the other skills those players bring to the table would help the Packers more than Brandon Jackson can.

I don't see much to argue with (effectively) a year later.

The 2nd round is typically the first round for running backs.

Thought I'd check this against the last five drafts.

2006 1st Rd had 4 RB's, 2nd Rd had 2 RB's
2007 1st Rd had 2 RB's, 2nd Rd had 3 RB's
2008 1st Rd had 5 RB's, 2nd Rd had 2 RB's
2009 1st Rd had 3 RB's, 2nd Rd had 1 RB
2010 1st Rd had 3 RB's, 2nd Rd had 4 RB's

17 in first round
12 in second round

Silly GM's haven't received the memo regarding 2nd round being the 1st round for running backs.

Regarding pass blocking ...

It was a skill he learned. If he could learn it, so could someone else.

That's about as informative as saying the sky is blue, grass is green and uncle sam will collect. lol. Nah, I agree with it and it goes along with I said about my feeling of a 3rd down back should be someone who's being groomed to take the featured back position. Which, again, as I said (sure do have to repeat myself a lot) I won't miss Brandon if he's not on our roster next season because in my opinion, he's proven he can not handle being a featured back. He simply does not have that talent.

I would have guessed more RB's selected in the 2nd round than 1st round myself considering the direction towards a more pass happy league the last few years. I wasn't expecting this result.

True, Packers drafted a running back with the second to last pick of the 2nd round in the 2007 draft.

He's started 16 games out of a possible 64, of which he contributed as asked in 52 of those games. He was not a bust. We got our use out of him and I think now that we've seen beyond reasonable doubt that he can not tote the featured back rock, it's time to cut ties.

Imagine he'd been chosen just TWO spots later, you wouldn't be mislabeling him as a bust. Crazy stuff, crazy. lol

A draft bust occurs when a highly touted draftee does not meet expectations, and conversely a lowly-drafted player going on to have a stellar career would be a draft steal. Of course, this is very subjective.

Subjective is right. I don't remember Brandon Jackson being highly touted.
