Nice little breakdown of the matchup.. worth the read.


Woodson, Packers in a must see matchup in Philly 

The main reason I love playoff football in the NFL is the matchups. Xs and Os, schemes, etc. One week to prepare for an opponent and then we get to see it played out on the big stage. That great matchup on Wild Card weekend in my opinion? The Eagles passing scheme vs. the Packers secondary.

Lets break it down. Five things to look for in this matchup

1. The Eagles route tree: Inside breaking routes. Andy Reid wants to see the ball thrown between the numbers and the hash. That is the west coast system and it hasnt changed since I was playing against the Eagles in my career. The Hi-Lo concepts (10-yard square-in, underneath crosser), the slants, the deep inside curl, the angle route, etc. Philly wants to get the ball to DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin, Brent Celek and LeSean McCoy with open field in front of them. 2. Pre-snap movement: Philly will use Jackson in motion to get that free release off of the line of scrimmage. Move to the stack look (immediate Hi-Lo alert), the bunch alignment and across the formation so the Eagles WR doesnt have to work at the line vs. Charles Woodson or Tramon Williams. There will be plenty of movement and shifting from the Eagles' offense to see what the Packers are playing from a coverage standpoint and to get Jackson open.

3. Physical corners: This is the reason I want to watch Woodson play football. I dont care that the Packers CB will hold at times or use his hands down the field, because he is an aggressive football player. That is a key when the Packers use their press-man looks at the line of scrimmage. Be physical with the Philly receivers, disrupt the release and sit on that bottom hip at the top of the routebecause that allows you to break underneath on the ball. Time to challenge QB Michael Vick.

4. The Packers pressure: Dom Capers is a pressure coach. With that comes more responsibility for the secondary. FS Nick Collins has to play disciplined football in the middle of the field and protect his CBs. Play with depth and be able to get over the top a vertical route outside of the numbers (which is a long run for the safety). On top of that, take good angles to the football and tackle in the open field. Woodson, Williams, etc will play aggressive, and if they get beat on a quick one-step slant, Collins has to get the WR on the ground. Live to see the next play when you are a pressure unit.

5. The deep ball: Watch for Philly to use some eight-man protection (max protection) and throw the deep vertical routes. The 7 (flag), the post and the entire playbook of double moves. Play action becomes big when the Eagles get near the mid-field stripe and they arent shy about running two-man routes that give Vick and opportunity to test the top of the defense. The Packers safeties have to play with depth in their Cover 2 looks and compete down the field in man coveragebecause the deep ball is coming this Sunday.

Maclin vs. Woodson will be a key match up. LeSean McCoy is also a lot better than people give him credit for. He is a constant for this team.

I think Sam Shields will be of a factor at CB more than Woodson. #21 can play LB,S, CB in this defense. He has made some great plays pressuring the QB & stopping running plays blitzing from LB and S.

So 50% of the time you will see Woodson in coverage, the other he maybe doing other things in the defense.

I think Sam Shields vs. Desean Jackson may play a role in this game. If Eagles go deep, Jackson is there man, and shields is our speed guy.

Sheilds played well defending Hester last week and i think he will be asked to cover jackson this weekend.

So 50% of the time you will see Woodson in coverage, the other he maybe doing other things in the defense.

I think Sam Shields vs. Desean Jackson may play a role in this game. If Eagles go deep, Jackson is there man, and shields is our speed guy.

Sheilds played well defending Hester last week and i think he will be asked to cover jackson this weekend.

I think Capers will first see what kind of pressure they can bring and who is winning the battle up front. If Jenkins plays and with Raji showing more ability to create pressure they may just be able to disrupt Vick without Woodson which would be the ideal scenario. If they don't get what they need then you will see Woodson but I think that will be a backup plan and an occassional brain teaser.

Funny you say this. I was thinking something similar. I think we'll be seeing a lot of Woodson blitzes, and like you said, going to tackles instead of just covering. Dom is fully aware that Woodson is the top tackler on the team and will want to use him as that.

Plus, with Vick, the best physical athlete on the team, you'll need someone to prevent him from getting loose. Nothing I hate more as an opponent than seeing Vick running in the open field. I can see Dom assigning Woodson to make sure Vick doesn't do that in a decent percentage of defensive plays.

I think you put your shut-down corner on Jackson, and that is Williams. Williams will be harassing Jackson all day often with help over the top. Shields on Jackson would make me very nervous. I think shields will be on Maclin when Woodson is working elsewhere.

It's going to be a tough game, but man, I'm excited!!

I think they will bring Woodson to both get Vick down and get in his head but what would be ideal would be for the front five to get the pressure on Vick. Philly has allowed 50 sacks and that's near the top in the league. I wonder how many they would have given up if he weren't their QB with his ability to escape.

I actually think they would've given up fewer sacks with another QB. It's always seemed to me that mobile QB's get sacked more often because they are always trying to extend the play. I think they are more likely to fumble as well. Running QB's are high risk high reward. That's why I hate playing against them, but at the same time, I wouldn't want one on my team. They drive me nuts either way.

I agree that it would be best for the front five to get pressure on Vick. If you rush more than that, they better get home or Vick will get past them and get into the open field. When it comes to all-out blitzes, Capers will have to pick his spots carefully. It was good to see Winfield causing so many problems for Vick on blitzes last week, as we've got a CB in Woodson who is capable of doing the exact same thing.

I think Woodson vs Maclin is a good matchup.
And Williams vs Jackson is a good matchup.
Now I think we may go the same approach as last time putting Shields on Maclin and Tramon on Jackson and Woodson covering the slot.

I think we have a better secondary going into the playoffs this year compared to last year.
2 big improvements:Sam Shields at Nickel Corner,and Charlie Peprah at SS.
I think Peprah is better than Bigby at Bigbys stage in his career.And defiantly Shields is a huge improvement from Bush or Lee.

We have been relatively healthy at CB this season so that's a plus too.

Right, all year we've been seeing articles about "Woodson vs Team X's #1 WR" however, Tramon will take the #1, Shields will take the #2, and Woodson will play in the slot over the #3, blitz, and just generally be all over the place. Tramon and Sam are the cover corners.
