What kills me are the draw plays and runs out of shotgun. The RB gets almost no momentum. We even ran Kuhn out of the wishbone in the beginning of the last game. I know draw plays have there place, but they don't seem to work very often.

I thought Rodger's backwards pass to Jackson on the goal line last game and his QB sneaks against the Falcons epitomized how pathetic our run game is. We have to rely on stupid tricks and using our QB b/c our run game is so pathetic.

I really miss Ryan Grant. Say what you want about the man, but he ALWAYS GOT POSITIVE YARDS!

A lot of the "experts" were saying there wouldn't be a drop off with BJack. Wow, they're stupid.

I think what Greg C said is right on - Ds are too fast for runs to the outside to work for most teams in the NFL, period. I remember Percy Harvin getting to the outside but that's usually on trick plays. We don't have the speed to pull it off.

Defenses are too fast to the sidelines these days. Either you have very athletic lineman who can pull and create good seal blocks and kick outs, or doesn't matter how fast a running back is. Currently I think the only lineman that can pull and block is Sitton, though Colledge had a couple nice ones against the Giants. So I think personnel-wise, our best chance is between the tackles. Our best attempts at attacking the edges in the short game were failed attempts like at the goal line with that lateral pass (I just read part. I think our run game is easy to attack because of the lack of athleticism up front. Could some other OLine coach do better with the personnel, maybe. Looking towards the next 4 games of the season, I am just hoping we keep scoring more points than the other team.

And if D's are so good at stopping wide runs why did the bears average 6.9 yards a carry on 10 of those runs?

I definitely thing that outside run should be emphasized more in the playbook but timing is key.

If we run through the tackles 4 times, I bet we will have success running outside on the 5th time. The key is looking at if the D is biting on the inside run. If we can get 4 blockers on 3 defenders running to the outside, then why would that not work in our favor.

When Mike McCarthy starts the game with B-Jack at halfback and Kuhn @ FB then tries to run over the left side for no gain over, and over again. everyone in the stadium knows when Gb is going to run and where.

try something different. How about running behind your best offensive linemen (Sitton), with your best blocking fb (Quinn Johnson), and a tripple threat of rb (kuhn, nance, starks).

and it would be great to run some sort of play action out of this formation.

I still don't believe that, particularly in goal-line situations, when the entire defense is lined up on the offensive line, that it would be impossible or impractical for a running back to run wide, where there is no one out there to defend him. That's the whole rationale behind rolling your quarterback out. Are you telling me our quarterback is faster than all our running backs? I don't buy it.

An analogous situation that also baffles me is the practice of kick or punt returners to run right into traffic and get swarmed under. So often I'll see the vast majority of the defenders (and blockers) clumped toward the middle of the field, and for some reason, the returner will head for that exact spot and get completely buried, despite the fact that there were huge running lanes on either side. Is the concept of running behind blockers so ingrained that they do it even when it impedes their forward progress?

This may be the offseason to fix our running game. Grant is coming back and should be good. We could pick up another RB like Michael Bush and an upgrade over Colledge at guard (maybe Logan Mankins, Harvey Dahl, or Davin Joseph). I know Ted Thompson has never thrown big money at an interior linemen, but that seems to be the only weak spot on our team.

There is a huge difference.. the QB has the threat of the throw to keep the defense from crashing in.. the back doesn't have that advantage.. the defense is going to crash every time.

Not really sure this is a league wide trend. Is this just personal observation/opinion or hard facts? Last week, the worst rushing team in the league (Arizona) in a game they were getting blown out in still ran around the end 5 times for 30 yards. Go ahead pick any game this season and count the runs around the end, you'll see more than just a few.
