Maybe some of you can enlighten me here. Is there a reason all of our runs seem to go between the tackles? Seems like we never run it wide. As far as I can remember (doesn't mean it didn't happen more) we only tried twice against the bears. Once on the toss to BJack near the goal line and once that Starks got about 10 yards before it was brought back by a penalty on Bulaga. Seems like Starks has the speed to get the corner.

Am I wrong on all this?

2010 Schedule block on the right side of the website, click the link and check the play by play's and you can come to your answer. I think it says if it was toward the tackle, or end. I believe Tackle means between the tackles and End means outside of tackle.

I am not sure on this.

I see this more as an NFL trend. The only times I really see a lot of running routes outside the tackles is by WRs, like the Percy Harvin with the Vikings for instance. Someone can enlighten me here, but which NFL team does a lot of sweeps? I just don't see it that much any more. Of the 3 teams I watch mostly (Packers, Vikings, and Niners), none of the teams do that much end running. I may be wrong, but Harvin seems to get more end routes than AP does.

Thanks for the link Zero.

Based on the play by play of the game, Green Bay ran "end" one time (not counting QB scrambles) for 9 yards but was called back for a penalty on Bulaga. Chicago ran "end" 10 times for 69 yards. I don't know, seems like maybe we could be doing it more.

Here are the reasons I came up with off the top of my head:

1. The ZBS emphasizes running between the tackles.

2. Our RBs are not particularly speedy (not even Starks) or good at changing direction quickly.

3. This applies to the entire league: Defenses have gotten better at blowing up those wide runs because DE's and LB's have gotten faster over the years. This is also why you almost never see pro offenses run the option play.

Could be that the ZBS runs between the tackles, I don't know. I do think Starks can get the corner though. And if D's are so good at stopping wide runs why did the bears average 6.9 yards a carry on 10 of those runs?

Also, after looking at the last viking game, they ran wide 8 times with harvin having 1 carry and ap and gerhart having the rest. I just get frustrated with the Packers running up the middle for 2 yards. Unless of course they only need 1 then we usually don't get that.

I think it's simply that our runners don't have the speed to get to the corner.

What kills me are the draw plays and runs out of shotgun. The RB gets almost no momentum. We even ran Kuhn out of the wishbone in the beginning of the last game. I know draw plays have there place, but they don't seem to work very often.

I thought Rodger's backwards pass to Jackson on the goal line last game and his QB sneaks against the Falcons epitomized how pathetic our run game is. We have to rely on stupid tricks and using our QB b/c our run game is so pathetic.

I really miss Ryan Grant. Say what you want about the man, but he ALWAYS GOT POSITIVE YARDS!
