Week 7: Nick Collins

Week 15: Charles Woodson

If you had told me that our secondary would have confined Tom Brady to 163 yards on the same YPA as our QB, I would have told you you were nuts. We did just that, keeping him off the field and not allowing him to find a rhythm. Using a good dose of man coverage with great pressure packages up front, we had a terrific game plan in place to contain Tom Brady.

Charles Woodson played an outstanding game even though he technically allowed the early TD to Hernandez. Maybe it was because we weren't finding ourselves defending a lot of 3rd and mediums, but Wes Welker was awfully quiet out there and that's how you beat this Patriots team. You have to minimize his 3rd down production from the slot and we have probably the best slot defender in the league to do just that. He may have lost a step on his long speed as we've seen over the season, but he still has it when it comes to containing pivot routes and such underneath. He dropped an easy pick which was a costly mistake on his part, but the TD I'd can't really fault him for. That's not a designed route, but just something that happens when you give Brady a good 5 seconds in the pocket.

Tramon only targeted once and I'm disappointed because it's going to hurt his YPA. I guess that's what happens when you have the luxury of having such a good cover corner out there. The Patriots do as good a job with game plans as any in the league and they recognized not to throw consistently at 38, even if he was usually on their "go-to" receiver in Deion Branch, who only saw 2 targets all day.

The Patriots offense definitely wanted to test Shields today and he held up decently. He gave up the touchdown after failing to make the tackle on Hernandez and the 16 yard 1st down on 3rd to Deion Branch was in his zone. Still he looked good defending that deep ball. He and Tate were stride for stride the whole way and once Shields recognized the pass, he overtook Tate and nearly had the pick. That man has some wheels on him.

What in the world is going on with Nick Collins? He hasn't played at a Pro Bowl level since midway through the season. It's not that he's just not making big plays, but he's giving up a couple also. He had some responsibility on the BJG 33 yard TD scamper and was caught peeking into the backfield rather than cutting the cushion with his man.

It doesn't get said often enough, but AJ Hawk really is the unselfish man on this defense. He's been playing very good ball, but just isn't the guy who is asked to make plays. I'd love to see a Bishop-Barnett combo in the middle as much as any other fan, but I have a feeling we give up some more big plays with that combo. Then again, how much worse could our run D get?

Erik Walden played a very nice game for his 1st start. With more reps, I have a feeling he could be a better backer than Zombo. He drew 2 penalties (a hold and a false start) and made a couple nice plays that were logged on the stat sheet as well. I came away more impressed with him in this game than I have with Zombo this season, but maybe he just hasn't had the time to be exposed and picked on like Zombo has at times. chrisbozzonerocks, I just wanted to say that I enjoy the living shit out of your pass metrics posts this season. It's kind of nice for a Packer and Brett Favre fan to see some purely informational posts not directed at bashing our former QB, while telling us how a vital part of our team is performing. Not that everyone is bashing people while presenting information...it just seems that some cannot separate the two. PLUS ONE!

Nice job as always Chris, although these articles would be much better if you could figure out a way to rip Brett Favre somewhere in there. Nah, I'm just kidding about that.

It seemed like this was the first game where Sam Shields got exploited a bit, but as your numbers show, he really didn't do that badly.

The run defense doesn't concern me. For the most part, it has been good enough when combined with the excellent pass defense. I think the Dolphins and the Falcons are the only teams that have really run the ball all over the Packers this year.

One thing this defense does not do enough is come up with the big stop or the big turnover in the fourth quarter when they need it. I know the defense has had to carry the team too many times this year, but still, big time defenses need to make big time plays in the fourth quarter. I'm not sure how much of this shortfall is on Dom Capers and how much is on the players. I tend to think it's more the players.

Falcons only ran for 117 yds against us. Detroit had 190 (2nd game), Minn 196 (1st game). Phil had 149, but over 100 of that was from Vick, so QB scrambles more than designed run plays. Including Mia, we've had 3 games in the 150+ realm (4 if you count Philly, which I don't).

Oh, and +1 Chris for an entertaining thread all year.

Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : sounds like Packers don't get good compensation, Jaire staying
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Nobody coming up with a keep, but at x amount
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Trade, cut or keep
dfosterf (16-Apr) : that from Jaire
dfosterf (16-Apr) : My guess is the Packers floated the concept of a reworked contract via his agent and agent got a f'
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Yes, and that is why I think Rob worded it how he did. Rather than say "agent"
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Same laws apply. Agent must present such an offer to Jaire. Cannot accept or reject without presenting it
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : I'm thinking that is why Rob worded it how he did.
dfosterf (16-Apr) : The Packers can certainly still make the offer to the agent
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Laws of agency and definition of fiduciary responsibility
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Jaire is open to a reduced contract without Jaire's permission
dfosterf (16-Apr) : The agent would arguably violate the law if he were to tell the Packers
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : That someone ... likely the agent.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : So, Jaire has not been offered nor rejected a pay reduction, but someone says he'd decline.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Demovksy says t was direct communication with someone familiar with Jaire’s line of thinking at that moment.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Demovsky just replied to me a bit ago. Jaire hasn't said it.
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Of course, that depends on the definition of "we"
dfosterf (16-Apr) : We have been told that they haven't because he wouldn't accept it. I submit we don't know that
dfosterf (16-Apr) : What is the downside in making a calculated reduced offer to Jaire?
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Packers are receiving interest in Jaire Alexander but a trade is not imminent
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Jalen Ramsey wants to be traded. He's never happy is he?
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : two 1sts in 2022 and two 2nd's in 2023 and 2024
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Packers had fortunate last three drafts.
dfosterf (15-Apr) : I may have to move
dfosterf (15-Apr) : My wife just told the ancient Japanese sushi dude not enough rice under his fish
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : I think a dozen is what I need
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Go fund me for this purpose just might work. A dozen nurses show up at 1265 to provide mental health assistance.
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Maybe send a crew of Angels to the Packers draft room on draft day.
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : I am the Angel that gets visited.
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Visiting Angels has a pretty good reputation
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : what
Martha Careful (14-Apr) : WINNING IT, not someone else losing it. The best victory though was re-uniting with his wife
Martha Careful (14-Apr) : The manner in which he won it was just amazing and wonderful. First blowing the lead then getting back, then blowing it. But ultimately
Zero2Cool (12-Apr) : I'm guessing since the thumb was broken, he wasn't feeling it.
dfosterf (10-Apr) : Looking for guidance. Not feeling the thumb.
Mucky Tundra (10-Apr) : If they knew about it or not
Mucky Tundra (10-Apr) : I don't recall that he did which is why I asked.
Zero2Cool (10-Apr) : Guessing they probably knew. Did he have cast or something on?
Mucky Tundra (10-Apr) : Did they know that at the time or was that something the realized afterwards?
Zero2Cool (9-Apr) : Van Ness played most of season with broken thumb
wpr (9-Apr) : yay
Zero2Cool (9-Apr) : Mark Murphy says Steelers likely to protect Packers game. Meaning, no Ireland
Zero2Cool (8-Apr) : Struggling to figure out what text editor options are needed and which are 'nice to have'
Mucky Tundra (8-Apr) : *CHOMP CHOMP CHOMP*
Zero2Cool (2-Apr) : WR who said he'd break Xavier Worthy 40 time...and ran slower than you
Mucky Tundra (2-Apr) : Who?
Zero2Cool (2-Apr) : Texas’ WR Isaiah Bond is scheduled to visit the Bills, Browns, Chiefs, Falcons, Packers and Titans starting next week.
Zero2Cool (2-Apr) : Spotting ball isn't changing, only measuring distance is, Which wasn't the issue.
Zero2Cool (2-Apr) : The spotting of the ball IS the issue. Not the chain gang.
