James Campen didnt mince words when it came to assessing the play of his offensive linemen in the Packers 7-3 loss at Detroit on Sunday.

Every one of the guys had a losing performance, Campen, the Packers offensive line coach, said on Monday after grading the film.

The poor play up front was the overriding factor in the upset loss at Ford Field. Other than two explosive gains on quarterback scrambles, one of which got starter Aaron Rodgers concussed and knocked out of the game, the Packers had no running room. Running backs Brandon Jackson (seven carries), James Starks (six) and Dimitri Nance (two) combined for 31 rushing yards largely through no fault of their own.

The Lions, who rarely blitzed, recorded eight quarterback hits and four sacks.

Campen chalked it up to things like footwork, hand placement and pad level, the latter of which was both a problem in the running game and on some of the bull rushes that created pressures and sacks.

It really stings you more when youre not fundamentally sound, and you allow that to happen because your own individual technique is not where it should be. To get physically beat in some of those instances is embarrassing.

Safe to say, it wasnt a pleasant Monday film review in the offensive line meeting room.

These guys will respond, and they will come back to work, and they will remember this, Campen said. This cannot happen. To have all of us getting beat, players at times are going to have a tough day, but then you rely on the next guy to pick you up. Thats being a teammate and working together. But too many times it was all of them.

The Packers lost starting left guard Daryn Colledge on the second play of the game. He sustained a left knee injury while trying to tackle Detroits Brandon McDonald, who recovered a fumble by Packers tight end Andrew Quarless. Jason Spitz finished the first half in Colledges place but then was benched in favor of T.J. Lang, who in the words of offensive coordinator Joe Philbin did OK, I guess and was average.

The surprising part about it was the Lions didnt do anything fancy. In many cases, they rushed only four. But their front seven dominated in the running game.

When you have five negative (yardage) runs, four sacks, two penalties, youre going backwards, Philbin said. Its hard enough to get a first down. Its tough to stick with the run game when you have five negative runs in the ball game.

...

Ted was late to the party in really trying to address this problem. I am still absolutely convinced that this is our biggest weakness, by far, and while it is highly possible that the solutions are actually on the team right now as far as personnel go, getting there is an excercise in frustration.

We gotta get Cliffy out of there. We gotta get Colledge out of there. Bulaga is on the wrong side, --which is totally understandable in our situation this year-progression and experience factors-and he just might be a left guard, not a left tackle. Wells may be too light in the trou, we gotta get better left guard play to really know that, Get good left guard play and see--Lang may be OK as a RT, but that GD wrist set us back, Sitton I have confidence in.

We need more linemen...I'm absolutely convinced. Please don't come back with "better". That is self-evident.

Is Bulaga a left tackle, or a left guard? Not talkin' based on who we have, but speculating on trying to get a VERY GOOD O-line, which in case you haven't noticed yet, we are gonna need going forward this decade.

Yep. We are gonna need more offensive linemen. It's Ted's fault. He tried to get by on the cheap AND through the draft, and he wasn't perfect. He would have had to have been, and he was not. That's not terrible, but it simply wasn't good enough, which is the hardest part to accept about his level of "draft only" rigidity/philosophy. It's darn near impossible to get it perfect enough through the draft when you have to repair holes on your team. How do you go "BPA" for example, if you will not utilize free agency to repair the holes?

He needs to modify his approach to a degree if we are going to fix our problems, imo You can't get a LG, CB and a RB with one first round draft pick, for example.

Spitz can hit the friggin' trail, and the happiest day of whatever year it winds up being is the day they shit-can Campen. I want to at least have some hope and a prayer that it's his fault too.

Campen needs to go. Ever since he became the offensive line coach in 07 the line has gotten worse. I know last year we gave up more sacks, but at least there were some holes in the running game. Now we can't pass block or run block. The run blocking is beyond bad. By the time the back gets the ball there is at least a man or two in the backfield waiting for him. It doesn't matter if we run B-jax, Starks, Grant, Barry Sanders. No RB is going to succeed with this blocking.

As far as talent development, he has developed ONE lineman we have drafted(Sitton, and even he is somewhat inconsistent). The rest have been either mind bogglingly inconsistent or just plain AWFUL. Look at Colledge, one game the guy plays like a pro bowler, and the next game he plays like a practice squad player. That is COACHING IMO. Some players seem to have regressed like Spitz. Look at the raw lineman we have drafted, Barbre, Breno, Whittacker, and Moll. Not a single one of these guys got any better since the day we drafted them. Either Ted and the scouting department can't find a quality lineman or we can't coach them. As a result we had to rely on tackles who are past their prime to start the year and when Tausch got injured(and was horrible) we put a rookie in who has never played RT in his life!!

The overall handling of the line sickens me. We draft rookies and instead of sticking them at one position we move them all over the line. How is a player supposed to develop when he is constantly switching positions? Look at BB. Drafted to play LT, played LG in pre season and is now playing RT, a position he hasn't played EVER. Same thing with Spitz played RG, C, and now LG.

I worry for BB's future, and every other offensive lineman we draft. I want a new coach, and not someone currently on MMs staff. A PROVEN NFL coach who has developed lineman. Otherwise, years from now we will still be talking about pass protection issues, and our inability to pick up a single yard on the ground when we need it.

The first thing to go, IMO, is this stupid fargin' zone blocking crap. I hate it. I hated it from the beginning. We're not good at it. We've never been good at it. And the line has been the weakest link of the offense ever since we switched to it.

I know we don't use it exclusively. I know it works on other teams. I don't care. It's not working here.

Either we don't have the right personnel to implement it or we don't have coaches who can teach it. Either way, it should have been a one-year-and-done failed experiment.

Fixing it is another matter. If we keep zone blocking, we'll either need new coaches or new players (probably both). Even though we've tried to draft "athletic" linemen to play in the ZBS, we've still got enough size to go back to the old way. I think that'd be easier. Hell, I'd even be willing to give Campen another year to redeem himself...

From what I've seen, our interior line is weakest spot on this team. As much as we all love Scotty Wells, its time to move on.

Offer NE a 2nd or 3rd rounder for Mankins and pay him. It will piss off Sitton (who is also due a raise soon). Draft a center in the 1st or 2nd round.

Line:
LT: Bulaga
LG: Mankins
OC: 1st/2nd
RG: Sitton
RT: Lang

TT has drafted something like 12 o-lineman and brought in several other UDFAs. I don't care where they were drafted, if you can't get more than 1 satisfactory (Sitton) player out of that something is wrong with your damn system. We need a new line coach who can make players better. Sitton was ready to go as a rookie, same with Bulaga. We have done absolutely NOTHING to coach up any lineman. It seems like they always get worse or stay mediocre the longer they are on this team.

I see two problems thoe..
I don't know anything about our offensive line coach as well so that's why im not burning on him.

1st problem have anyone noticed we haven't really changed our line that much the last 3 years??We need new guys to start if the guys we have aren't working out...

2nd problem we need to draft better linemen we need some athletic linemen in there even at guard draft them high if you want,a lot of guys we get just don't pan out.

The most potential offensive linemen on our team is Sittin and Bulaga im not putting wells in here because well he's proven he had potential.

IMO I agree we probably need an experienced coach,we need to replace clifton and or tausher and put bulaga at LT and replace colledge. We could also bring in a veteran offensive linemen.

Also I wish we would sign a olinemen during the year we never do.

We need big,strong,athletic offensive linemen.

Right now we may have the worst Offensive line in the NFL next to the bears.

I'll take his buddy Moffit too. I'm not sure Bulaga has the stuff for left tackle. I actually think Newhouse is better suited for it with what we have in house. I was looking at some mock drafts yesterday, and there aren't any lineman taken in the top 15 picks, which bodes well for us in that good players will fall, but bad because there might not be that deep a pool this year.

I mentioned Gabe last season during the draft.. he lived up to his potential at UW.

Hell I will take that entire freaking Wisconsin line.. or better yet the freaking coach and solve our SOBing issues already.

I don't think we lack talent.. I think we lack coaching and focus.. which is trickled down from the coaches holding them accountable.

Get it done.. or sit on your ass on the bench.. not reaching those incentives.
