I hated the call too. Flynn had been inaccurate with his deep throws all day. It's not a choice between two yard patterns and fly patterns. They could've run any number of routes in between that would not have required an accurate deep throw by Flynn. I thought the throw on the play before, on third and one, was also too far downfield (maybe 10-15 yards, incomplete to Driver). McCarthy has done too much of that this season, usually without success.

The 3rd down play wasnt' bad. It had 2 5 routes that were towards the inside of the field, then a 10 and 15 yard crosses.

I think they should have rolled him out one one to have that 1 yard QB run option.
The world needs ditch diggers too Danny!!!

Jennings 1 on 1 with Vashar? I'll take that any day.

With Rodgers taking the snap, yes. With a QB who has taken limited game snaps, no. Too risky and a bad gamble.

Given the complete lack of a short-yardage running game, I can't complain about the playcall...

Overall, I like Mike McCarthy as a coach, and I think he's done a terrific job this year fielding a competitive team week in and week out, when injuries could have completely decimated the season. But there's usually a couple of times each game where one of his decisions makes me scratch my head. This weekend was no exception.

First was to not challenge the call of incomplete pass on Jenning's catch. To me, that was the kind of situation where throwing the flag is almost mandatory.

Yeah, I know the replays were looking inconclusive and based on the initial ones it would not have been overuled. But we hadn't used a challenge all game to that point. The score was 0-0. If we had lost the challenge, what were we going to lose? One timeout.

We still had a 2nd challenge if we needed it later. It's not like they were going to back us up 5 yards are anything like that. If the call on the field is upheld, kick the FG.

IMO, a timeout would not have been a huge loss, and the potential gain is huge. As it turns out, it would have been 7-7 going into that last drive (if overturned), and we would only have needed a FG to win, not a TD.

The second decision: Personally, I would have liked a little higher percentage play on 4th-and-1. Going for a homerun ball put the game--and likely our entire season & the playoffs--on the line on a bomb with our #1 QB sitting on the sidelines with a concussion. One yard was all we needed to get four more shots.

If it had been the 3rd down play, I would have been thumbs up. I might also have scratched my head a little less if it had been Aaron Rodgers back there, but it was Flynn.

I know a backup is expected to be ready to play at a moments notice, but I doubt he had the same amount of reps as Aaron Rodgers throwing that route to Jennings.

In any event, I like Mike McCarthy, but wish he'd reduce these number of head scratching moments.

MM real blunder was the run on 2nd and 2. Why is McCarthy so afraid to commit to his own running game? Three shots to gain two yards RUN THE BALL!

Calling a timeout after you shredded the Lions defense on three consecutive pass plays was puzzling to me too.

That play-action dump out of the "I" to Quarless, which had been working well the entire game, would have been my choice on second down.

Good post +1. I agree with you for the most part. As fans we only focus on the negatives but McCarthy has done a lot of positive things for this team.

Nope.

Really.. if he runs and doesn't make it.. one can say damn it why not throw it short.. we are a passing team.

If he throws it short.. one can say damn it.. one yard.. man up and run the damn ball.

We can play this game all day long. lol.

But he went for the game.. on a short yardage play when more than likely the Lions aren't looking for it. It was a gamble.. but I sure in the hell won't complain because he went for the game.

But we can say he should have ran a ton of different calls.. but I think the lack in trust in Flynn, reading and checking down in progressions made the call a single route.. a single read to your big money WR.. it was a risk no doubt.

But not worth getting wound up about.

We can do that over the lack of effective running and not helping Flynn nor Rodgers out for the remainder of the 58 of the game.

Be pissed about that.. a one dimensional offense that sooner or later is going to be stopped. That is what I will hold their feet to the fire upon.. not one shot late in the game.

Zero2Cool (10-Feb) : Eagles traded up for Carter, didn't they?
Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : Obviously he was a huge risk but getting a top 5 talent on the dline in the mid 20s is fortuitous
Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : Jalen Carter falling into their lap certainly helps
TheKanataThrilla (10-Feb) : And we could only wish to have this type of D
TheKanataThrilla (10-Feb) : It's not like Philly has had low draft picks, but has managed to get themselves a top notch pass rush. We spend so much draft capital of D
packerfanoutwest (10-Feb) : another crap halftime show
TheKanataThrilla (10-Feb) : I think it is over, but then I think of Atlanta and want Philly to go in with the same intensity in the second half
