This article's title is not correct.

The Packers don't have to win out. They can win three of four and still get the bye. In fact, I believe it is a more realistic scenario than winning at New England.

Here is a breakdown.....

Green Bay goes 3-1 the rest of the way. Their only loss at New England. That puts the Packers at 11-5.

Chicago goes 1-3 in their final four games. Funny, I believe the Bears will beat the Jets and lose to the Vikings in Minnesota. Just a hunch, but I have hard time seeing Chicago getting to 11 wins this season. Still, they finish with a respectable 10-6.

Giants go 3-1, with their only loss to the Packers. Remember, Philadelphia travels to New York in their matchup. The Giants also play Minnesota and Washington as well. I think they can win three of four. At the very least, the Giants are probably not going 12-4.

Eagles go 2-2, with losses on the road to the Giants and once to Dallas. They go 10-6 as a result.

The key for Green Bay is to win their final two games as well as taking care of buisness against Detroit. If the Packers do that, they will have a better record than Chicago. Of course, this is assuming the Bears slip up at least one time before they meet the Packers.

In addition, Green BAy would have victories over Philadelphia and New York. That means the division winner of the NFC East would have to have a better record than Green Bay. They would have to be 12-4. Possible, but probably as wishful as Packer fans thinking they can go to New England and win.

Potential No. 2 seed scenario could look like this

1. Atlanta 13-3
2. Green Bay 11-5
3. N.Y. Giants 11-5
4. NFC West Champion with whatever they earned.
5. New Orleans 12-4
6. Chicago 10-6

Bottom line is get to 9-4 and then win your final two home games. Do that and the green and gold will have a bye IMO.

The worst part is that some NFC West team will take a playoff spot from a more deserving team, but we'll save that topic for another discussion.

My point is that if the Packers blow this thing, but still end up 11-5 or 10-6, they might not make the playoffs, but an 8-8 or 7-9 team might. It would be rather disappointing.

Exactly why I really hate the playoff talk NOW...To many ifs, to many whats

As I said before wait until the last 3 games, little easier to comprehend

I hate to say it, I really do, but the Pats are the best team in football right now: hands down. No-names at receiver. No-name at running back. No-names on defense. Doesn't matter.

However... I am not afraid. I will strap on my cheesehead and take the [strike]field[/strike] armchair and root for the Green and Gold. And damn the consequences!

You are correct.. they can make it other ways.. but winning out is the only way they control their own fate..

There are too many games left to worry about "what ifs". A couple losses, and it won't matter, we won't make the playoffs. And that would be sad. The way our team has fought so hard, they deserve to make it.
4 losses by a combined 12 points. That might bite us bad at the end.
Of course i HOPE the "new" running game will help. But man.....the injuries have been awful.
I don't think it's conditioning at all. I think it's just bad luck. Some years, you make it through without injuries, other times, it's like this year.
Just the fact that we have been able to remain in the playoff hunt, with this many serious injuries, shows me that Mike McCarthy AND Ted Thompson have been working hard. I doubt many teams could be this good losing as many players as we have.

If we beat the Giants and have already beaten Philly would we not get the #2 Seed if we win the North and whoever wins that Division also finished 11-5?

If we beat the Giants the best they can finish is 11-5 and if we lose only to NE we will have a 5-1 Division record and three more wins in the NFC.

I don't see where it's an absolute that we HAVE to win out to get the #2 seed. Now I am HOPING we win out and think we have a good shot to but I think there's still a way to lose a game and get the #2.

You're right. If we win 3 of 4 with our 1 loss being to New England we'll probably get the 2nd seed. The South winner will likely have 1st, the West is irrelevant, and so it will come down to the North winner and the East winner. As you said the Giants could finish no better than 11-5 so we would go ahead of them. If the Eagles win the division we would need them to lose 1 more game and considering they play a resurgent Dallas twice, Minnesota once, and the Giants once I'd say there is a good chance they drop one of them. This of course assumes we actually win the North because Chicago could also finish 3-1 losing to us and take the division (and the 2nd seed).

"mi_keys" wrote:

I thought that was the case. I will say the odds of us finishing 11-5 are much greater than the Bears finishing 3-1. Teams have an uncanny ability to play their worst against these guys but I am saying the voodoo doll has all the pins it can take.

It all starts this week for them. The only way they beat NE is if the Pat's plane goes down. Even then it would probably take four turnovers, ten penalties, and overtime. That's the only way they ever get by good teams.

Anyways the average fan that only reads the headlines of these articles should know the basis of this one is just not accurate.

Color me wrong.. but the premise of the article was that if the Packers win out.. they control the second seed regardless of what anyone else does.

We control it if we win out.. any other scenario requires other teams to do something to assist.

Simply.. if we win out.. we are the second seed regardless.. wins over the Giants and Bears included.

Mark it down.. we beat the Pats in NE.

The reason I pointed out that the article was incorrect by stating the Packers "need" to win out is the fact that the scheduling is much different than in the past.

The big difference is all teams are playing more Division games this last month they they have had to before. I think it was a great move. Makes for a nail-biting finish. Many of the teams fighting for a Division title have big challenges ahead.

I like our chances because McCarthy always has the team playing well in December and his focus is building momentum and playing their best this time of year.

It's going to be a heck of a month.
