I agree w/ Zero, but pack93z brought up a great question. Does the Rooney rule protect against reverse-discrimination as well?

Nope and probably for the same reason there's not a White History month.

I think a lot of the reason it was covered that way was that there was always this suspicion that black coaches were hired just because they were black, as sort of a political correctness thing. So finally this was proof that that was not the case.

I was uncomfortable with the way it was covered in the media, too. But at the same time I was thinking: As silly as this seems now, at least the next time it happens it won't be a big deal.

How did forcing teams to interview a minority prove black coaches weren't being hired for political correctness? I mean, hell, the Rooney Rule IS political correctness.

You need to go back and read the post that I was responding to. That's why I included it in my own post. It was not about the Rooney rule, it was about media coverage of the Super Bowl at the end of the 2006 season, when there were two black head coaches.

Rooney Rule = stupid.

One should be hired based on their credentials and how they conduct themselves in the interviewing process. Not on how they look.

The Rooney rule has nothing to do with hiring--just interviewing.

Which proves the point at how useless it really is.
Lets say you go to buy a car.....you are going to buy a Chevrolet. Your mind is already made up. But the "law" says you HAVE to look at a Volkswagen And a Ford first.
What did it accomplish?
Your mind was already made up beforehand.
But it made it LOOK good.

I never was for racial quotas.
Back in the late 1970's, i was thinking of trying to be a policeman. Saw an add in the paper.
It said "If you are a minority or a woman, come apply!
Now....i don't know about you.....but when i need a cop, i want the BEST one, reguardlerss of their skin color or sex.

Unless you look at the Volkswagen or Ford and are so impressed by it that you change your mind. Or maybe you buy the Chevy anyway, but when your friend is ready to buy a car, you tell him that he should check out the Volkswagen or Ford because it looked pretty good. Word does get around the league about which coaching candidates interview well and which ones don't.

Here's the deal though......don't you think that if someone feels FORCED to interview someone, that just might make them say to themselves "Screw this, i'm gonna pick who I want, not be forced into something."
I think racial quotas cause more resentment then anything.

Interview me because you think I can do the job, not because of the pigment of my skin. Period.

The purpose of the interview is to make an educated decision between your choices. With the Rooney rule, guys are 'tossed' into the fray because of their skin color, not necessarily because of their qualifications.

beast (8-Aug) : It's a new rule, so it's not clear, but my understanding was that they could be IR'd at any time
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : *had to be IRed at 53
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : beast, I thought the designate return from IR players had to be IR at cutdowns to 53, not before
beast (8-Aug) : It's a brand new rule, either last season or this season, prior, all pre-season IRs were done for the season
beast (8-Aug) : But the Packers would have to use one for their return from IR spots on him, when they cut down to 53.
beast (8-Aug) : I think the NFL recently changed the IR rules, so maybe the season might not be over for OL Glover.
Zero2Cool (8-Aug) : Packers star Howton, first NFLPA prez, dies at 95 😔
dfosterf (8-Aug) : Apparently it is too complicated for several to follow your simple instructions, but I digress
