Speedster has potential 

Green Bay The Minnesota Vikings have Percy Harvin. The Chicago Bears have Devin Hester. The Detroit Lions have Stefan Logan.

The Green Bay Packers?

They've ridden up and down with Jordy Nelson and Pat Lee on kickoff returns and treaded water with Tramon Williams on punt returns most of the season.

But in an attempt to keep up with Joneses, the Packers plan to break out their own return specialist Sunday against the Vikings. Welcome to the NFC North, Sam Shields.

"If he's back there, good luck because he's got some speed," said Charlie Peprah, a regular member of the special teams until his ascension to starting safety. "That will be a good changeup."

The Packers haven't had a Pro Bowl-type season from a returner since Allen Rossum finished fourth in the NFL in kickoff return average (25.8) in 2000. Over the past five seasons they have ranked 19th, 31st, 22nd, 31st and 32nd in kick return average.

This year, they rank sixth in the NFL in average drive start (29.1), but they have lacked the momentum-changing uppercut of a breakaway threat. In his only return of the season two weeks ago against Dallas, Shields broke through a lane for a 49-yard gain, causing coach Mike McCarthy and special teams coach Shawn Slocum to practically hand him the kickoff return job before he reached the sideline.

"We're all pretty excited about his capabilities," Peprah said.

Shields, an undrafted rookie cornerback, will be the main kickoff returner in a clash with the division-rival Vikings at the Metrodome Sunday, although Slocum reserved the right to use Nelson and Lee as he saw fit. However, he also indicated he wouldn't preclude Shields from replacing Williams as the punt returner as well.

The Shields move has a risk-reward element to it that the Packers know they're going into such a hostile environment to play a hated rival.

On the one hand, Shields runs the 40-yard dash in 4.28 seconds and will be playing on Astroturf, the fastest surface in the NFL. He'll be returning the ball against a team that ranks dead last in opponent starting field position, largely due to the fact Ryan Longwell's kickoffs reach the end zone only 25% of the time.

On the other hand, he is not a natural ball catcher and was a disaster in training camp. His nadir came in the exhibition opener when he muffed kickoff and punt returns against the Cleveland Browns, continuing a trend of mishandling the ball in practice.

He basically wasn't heard from again on returns until Slocum gave him a shot against Dallas. All through the season, Shields has been working on catching the ball in practice, and Slocum liked what he had seen from Shields of late.

"That's on practice," Shields said of his improvement. "Each week I've gotten better and better."

Shields does not have the return background Harvin, Hester and Logan have, although he nearly scored a touchdown against Wisconsin last year on a reverse kickoff return in the Champs Sports Bowl, but he has the speed to allow him to fit into Slocum's scheme.

Mostly, Slocum wants running back types who are accustomed to picking a hole and then getting upfield. It's good for getting past the 20 on a consistent basis but not necessarily great for returning kicks for touchdowns.

With Shields, however, Slocum thinks there will be lanes he'll be able to exploit before they close down.

"I think you take a good look at how we set up, just the spacing there for our returner to get started and run fast, our guys have done a pretty good job," Slocum said. "We've had very few kickoff returns tackled inside the 20 this year."

Asked if he thought Shields would have to throttle down some to assure that he finds the right hole, Slocum laughed.

"I think it's more important to get the blockers out of the way," Slocum said. "The blockers should speed up, let Sam run fast. I'm serious. If the returner needs to slow down because of the blockers, you need to re-evaluate what you're doing. Let the fast guy run fast."

Early in the season, it looked like Nelson was going to have a successful year returning kickoffs. He had returns of 51, 34 and 40 yards in his first three games, leaving him with an impressive 28.5-yard average.

But then he lost a pair of fumbles against Detroit, lost confidence and gave way to Lee. In three games, Lee averaged 19.8 yards per return with a long of 30.

Finally, Shields got his shot at the start of the second half against the Cowboys. Kicker David Buehler hit a fairly low ball 6 yards deep into the end zone. Shields fielded it cleanly and began running up the left side of the field.

At about the 10, he broke hard to the right and found an alley created in part by John Kuhn's block. He raced all the way to the other side of the field and was finally pushed out of bounds near the Packers sideline at the 43-yard line.

" 'Slo' has done a good job of giving the returner the option to run the ball in different places," Peprah said. "He leaves it up to the returner to make something happen."

In what should be a tightly contested ball game, every piece of real estate you can get counts. Harvin, who has three returns of 40 or more yards this season, is a sure thing on kickoff returns. Shields is fast and inexperienced, a fumble away from making the risk part of the equation greater than the reward.

"It should be a good matchup," Peprah said.

HA that would be awful. I do like putting a speedy guy back there who is also quick. Jordy is by no means slow, but he is not shifty at all IMO, and I think that Shields may be able to bring to the table what all teams are looking for at KR and PR.

We'll see. Jordy regularly had good returns but didn't have the speed to take it to the house. Shields seems to have that speed. I'm just hoping he's an upgrade, as I want a STs threat like we had in '96. That was fun to watch.

If he has the catching issue sorted then he absolutely needs to be out there as the kick returner. He is just too athletic to not use him in every way we can. I would like to see him used first at kick returner though because if the dropsies do come back at least a fumble on a kick return is likely bad field position, on a punt it's a turnover.

Don't mean to be too hard on the guy, but I'm not that concerned about our return game... Maybe I'm just used to special teams being terrible and thus I'm okay with mediocrity.

Green Bay Packers CB Sam Shields' speed outweighs risk in return role 

Sam Shields dropped, muffed or fumbled so many kickoffs and punts during training camp and the preseason that the legion of reporters who blog and tweet off every Green Bay Packers practice should have programmed a quick key for that text.

After the undrafted rookie dropped a kickoff in the end zone, then muffed a punt in the same preseason game against the Cleveland Browns, the experiment seemingly was over.

Almost no one who observed those repeated scenes would have imagined that three months later coach Mike McCarthy and special teams coordinator Shawn Slocum would have the nerve to stick Shields back on the goal line on Nov. 7 to receive the opening kickoff of the second half against the Dallas Cowboys. Then again, almost no one outside the organization knew Shields had been catching balls off the JUGS machines before practice, after practice and on his days off for three months.

When Shields cleanly fielded that kickoff 6 yards deep in his end zone against the Cowboys, many of the 70,913 at Lambeau Field probably let out a sigh of relief.

I remember watching it from the sideline, and (Cowboys kicker David) Buehler crushed that kick with good hang time and 6 yards deep, and I was like, Oh, too bad Sam will have to just kneel on this one, Packers punter Tim Masthay said.

But Slocum knew there was more to come. Sure enough, Shields turned on his speed his 4.2-second, 40-yard-dash speed and blew past the Cowboys coverage unit for a 49-yard return, the Packers second-longest kickoff return of the season.

When he brought it out, I was like, Oh crap, Masthay said. The next thing I knew he was at the 45-(actually the 43-)yard line. His biggest upside is that hes just lightning fast, and I mean fast to a different level. Hes probably one of the fastest guys in the league.

When told return guys dont normally take it from 6 yards deep, Slocum said: Not normally, no. But hes not normal.

There was nothing special about the way the Packers blocked that return. Slocum said the Cowboys had some good tackling angles on Shields. He just outran them.

Forget for a moment Shields has settled into the third cornerback spot and has looked nothing like an undrafted free agent who played receiver for most of his college career at the University of Miami. Thats another success story.

This story is about the risk the Packers seemingly took by putting Shields on kickoff returns and the rewards they hope to see.

I was hoping, Shields said when asked this week whether he thought hed get another opportunity after all the drops this summer. I never gave up on it. It was just that they had other guys. At that time, I wasnt catching it and wasnt giving the coaches enough confidence in me to put me back there.

They used receiver Jordy Nelson, who other than a 51-yard return in Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles, was ordinary. Nelson then lost two fumbles against Detroit on Oct. 3 and eventually lost the job to backup cornerback Pat Lee, who couldnt keep it because he sustained an ankle injury against the Jets on Oct. 31.

Shields has only that lone return against the Cowboys on his NFL resume, but it was enough to convince McCarthy and Slocum to give him the job full time. Slocum on Thursday said he wouldnt rule out the possibility Shields could go back to returning punts, a far more dangerous job considering he would have to catch the ball in heavy traffic, unlike on kickoff returns where the defenders are far away.

But the Packers are convinced Shields no longer has slippery fingers.

Hes definitely improved with his hands, said kicker Mason Crosby, who witnessed some of the extra work Shields put in during his free time. Its a learned skill. You just have to get used to catching it over and over and over again.

Masthay, too, was on the practice field for much of Shields work with the JUGS machine and sees a different return man, a more confident one, than he watched over the summer.

A lot of times thats all it takes, one big play like that, and the skys the limit for him, Masthay said. That kickoff return he had against Dallas, that might have been all it took for him and it not be an issue at all.

Every week, Crosby and Masthay have to prepare strategies they believe will limit returners opportunities for big plays. In their division, they have to face one of the most dangerous ones, Chicagos Devin Hester, who returned a punt 62 yards for a touchdown against the Packers on Sept. 27. Both Crosby and Masthay said this week that even after only one kickoff return, Minnesota Vikings kicker Ryan Longwell almost certainly will have to come up with a strategy for kicking to or away from Shields.

He has such blazing speed that you dont want him running right at you, Crosby said. You can almost lose him, too, because hes fast and smaller (5-foot-11), and he can hide back there. Once a guy like that gets on the edge, he can be pretty dangerous.

One 49-yard return does not make a special teams star, but as long as Shields keeps catching and hanging onto the ball, his star may have been born.

He has the skills to be one of those guys, Crosby said. Obviously, he showed his speed. I think he just needs more opportunities, but with our defense, who knows how many chances hes going to get? Its one of those things where you cant really say too much until he repeats it. Guys like Hester, its repeated acts.
