Al has always been a straight forward no BS guy, that is the only reason I put stock in his claim the Packers weren't straight forward with him and "leading" him on. We will never know, but it could be just emotions pouring out for Al.

Regardless, I have no issue with the football decision made, beyond Shields, I think the Packers themselves see the same progress in Bush this season that we the fans are seeing. It would take a rash of secondary injuries to put us in a point that Al would have to have been count on past a nickel spot.

I still worry about this defense when we get into an offense the has pre-snap movement and stack sets.. it would force us to shift out of the press man coverage and can our corners adjust to that effectively or will we see another Cardinal confusion game?

Man coverage is more physically demanding.. but zone coverage takes more experience and thought. Time will tell.. but Harris wasn't a zone cover guy anyway.. so he wouldn't help in that nature anyway.

Comparisons would be, is Al a better option than Underwood. IMO, Underwood still has a ton of upside so no.

But is Al a better option than say a Simpkins in the short and long term nature?

Or does Al bring more value than a third Fullback?

Al has the heart of a lion and then some. I wish more players had his passion and fire.

I have to believe that he has lost more than a step because of the injury. No matter how much desire he has. No matter how much knowledge he brings on to the field, if he can't make the cuts, if he can't stay with his man, he is going to be a liability at some point during the game.

The Brass knows that he will never be what he once was. They went with the younger guys. It happens on every team every single year.

I personally wished that they could have moved him over to Safety. I thought that he could come up and help on run support and be able to cover over the top on a pass.

It is not a question of whether or not Al is better than the 3rd FB or the 8th LB. They only have so many slots they are willing to use for CB and they want to keep the guys they all ready have.

The Green Bay Packers' decision to release cornerback Al Harris was "not a physical decision," coach Mike McCarthy said Monday. Instead, McCarthy said, "this is a big-picture roster decision."

Translation: The Packers didn't have much use for a reserve cornerback who wouldn't be a special-teams contributor and might hinder the development of a younger player.

Harris obviously wasn't going to reclaim his starting job from Tramon Williams, and the Packers like what they've seen from rookie nickel back Sam Shields.

So at best, Harris would have been the Packers' dime back assuming everyone ahead of him remained healthy.

I am not surprised. The Packers rave about Harriss replacement Tramon Williams and are actively looking to extend his contract. With other young cornerbacks skilled at special teams, Al became a luxury.

Even injured, Al was an admired presence by players, coaches and administrators alike. And Al would do anything for a friend. When I was being considered for the Packers CEO position in 2007, Al offered a video testimonial about me with a couple other players to submit to the search committee. Thats the kind of guy he is.

I negotiated several contracts for Al all with my NFP colleague Jack Bechta and never found him to be unreasonable in his requests.

Although 35, after many years as a backup in Tampa and Philadelphia prior to the Packers, Al has some football left in him.

Harris clears waivers

Former Packers cornerback Al Harris will have to take a pay cut to play in the NFL this year.

Harris passed through waivers on Tuesday according to multiple reports, meaning no team wanted the prorated rest of his $2.5 million contract.

The Packers brass watched Harris closely in practice for three weeks, so there has to be legitimate questions about whether he's NFL ready following reconstructive knee surgery. Still, we'd be surprised if Harris didn't wind up with a low-cost gig in relative short order.

I forget, was Tauscher's contract not renewed, or was he waived and not signed 'til the packers picked him up? Either way, I'm not calling it, but I wouldn't be stunned if something similar happens...Harris bides his time and after an injury winds up back with the team.

Tauscher was a free agent. He visited the Chiefs, but (obviously) didn't sign. He wanted to come back to GB.
