Week 1 Week 2 Week 3 Week 4 + Season Week 5 Week 6 Week 7 Week 8 + Season Week 9 (Dallas Cowboys):Cumulative Totals to be posted after Week 11.Well this was a short, fun week. Woodson coming back into his own, Tramon playing nearly flawless ball, though he dropped an easy one which would have given us our second consecutive shutout. He could have probably housed it as well. Shields making some nice plays. Great pass rush. Great game plan. Great game to watch minus the garbage yards we gave up at the end. It pained me marking some of them down against our guys.
My Coverage Player of the Week:Week 1: Tramon Williams
Week 2: Sam Shields
Week 3: Nick Collins
Week 4: Charles Woodson
Week 5: Tramon Williams
Week 6: Nick Collins
Week 7: Nick Collins
Week 8: Charles Woodson
Week 9: Charles Woodson/Tramon WilliamsI'm splitting this week's game ball between Woodson and Tramon. Woodson blanked his assignments, the first such game for one of our starting corners this year. While Tramon gave up 8 completions, most of them were quick hitters to his receiver with him playing a good 8-10 yards off. Yet time after time, he came up and made the sure tackle. His lone first down was given up to Dez Bryant on that final drive where the Cowboys tacked on some solid garbage yards. Without that garbage time catch, he allows 2.43 yards per attempt on balls thrown in his direction.
If the "game ball" were to go to the defensive player of the game, then it would hands down be given to Woodson who along with the Claymaker showed up in a big time way today. One stat I would LOVE to see across the league for cornerbacks is (Total Tackles - Receptions Allowed). Woodson finished with a +5 today and +32 on the season. This shows the number of tackles a cornerback has made on plays outside of his coverage assignment. It would penalize them for receptions on which they didn't finish the play, but would credit them for making a play on a play in which they had no coverage responsibilities (runs + receptions allowed by others). That +32 mark would be phenomenal through the full season, but halfway through... I'm sorry, I'll stop talking about Woodson's play around the LOS. The reason I didn't give him the outright game ball was because of that play early in the game where Kitna missed a wide open Austin on the deep ball. It was a pretty routine deep ball.
Sam Shields is really one helluva an athlete WITH instincts. It's not often times you get one with the other. He may get beat deep a couple times this year on double moves (as was likely the case on the Dez Bryant deep ball before the end of the 1st half), but you can see his head is in the game. He's doing things only veterans do. He's reading routes and down and distance situations. He's turns for the ball casually without initiating contact. I got so excited for him when he made that pick. A terrific play from a player who will only get better. I wouldn't be too surprised if he's our future starting corner alongside Tramon. That would certainly be a formidable pair once Charles calls it a career.
Neither were really "targets" on Clay Matthews, but that's how I've been scoring the metrics all year long. I gave Matthews the target on the pick and on ball he swatted backwards.
Chillar is definitely not our best open field tackler. He allows us to do certain things on defense we can't do with say a Bishop (run linebackers down the seam with tight ends), but he really hasn't been all that good this year. I'm sure his shoulder is still bothering him though, so we can give him a pass for not making the tackle on Witten. Speaking of Bishop, he looked bad on Witten's 30 yard catch and run. He doesn't really play well receivers get behind him. He needs to keep things in front of him to be at his best.
Finally, no complaints about Peprah today either. Most of the big balls were thrown on Collins' side of the field. The Shields long ball could have potentially been credited to Collins who may have been late over the top, but Shields was definitely in man coverage on that one. It was straight man all around with a couple dropping into a zone (Cover 2 or Cover 3...I forget). full article.
