Done Deal.

The Green Bay Packers have released CB Al Harris. The transaction was announced Monday by Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations Ted Thompson.

Harris, who was acquired by Green Bay from Philadelphia in a trade in 2003, started all 102 games he played in for the Packers over seven seasons (2003-09). He was named to the Pro Bowl in 2007 and 2008 and earned second-team All-Pro honors from The Associated Press in 2007. Harris set the Packers single-season record for passes defensed (tracked since 1982) with 28 in 2004, and he posted 14 interceptions and 108 passes defensed during his time in Green Bay.

We want to thank Al for his contributions to the Green Bay Packers, Thompson said. His hard work, dedication and professionalism have been the keys to his success. During his time here, he has been a valuable member of our organization and our community. We wish him the very best in the future and he will always be a part of the Packer family.

The question now, is that if Shields follows trend and goes down, what are we left with? Jarrett Bush and Brandon Underwood. Both are still a little green IMO. Thats the only thing that really makes me nervous about dropping Harris. It is hard for me to believe that Harris wouldn't do a better job, even if he is behind Shields, than Bush and Underwood. I hope I'm wrong, because there is a lot of season left. Hopefully the next two weeks are good to Pat Lee.

This was my concern too...but it's hard to justify a roster spot for a security blanket when others can produce NOW in various ways (e.g. special teams).

This was a point I tried to make eariler...IR obviously does him and the Packers NO good, but release means either he can find work, and who knows...if the packers sustain an injury, he clears waivers, etc. maybe he winds up back on the team. Sadly this is all sentimental because the move shows he's no longer even the 3rd best option at CB.

Would embed this if I knew how, but one of Harris' finest moments as a packer. Harris vs. the Seahawks

So lets piece this together a bit, Harris gets word weekly to get ready, then after 3 weeks are up, sounds a bit surprised and blindsided.

As much as I like the roster and coaching staff we have built.. it seems we still have a bit of communication breakdowns in the organization.

I don't mind them making a decision to move on, but somewhat a bit disappointed that this should be a surprise to Al. A veteran player that has paid his due with a club shouldn't have such a reaction. He should be deal with in an honest approach and straightforward leaving the player in a complete understanding and not surprised and taking that to the media.

Unless there was a disconnect between player personnel and the coaching staff.. which still reeks of communication issues.

IMO anyway.

This one's in better quality... And shows Hasselbeck's guarantee. Great find, though, musccy. +1.

I view it as we gave him every chance to prove that he deserved a spot on the roster--giving him more than enough benefit of the doubt. However, it didn't look like it was going to work out. Instead of placing him on IR, they release him because he is completely confident that he is good to go. They gave him an opportunity to prove himself, but we just didn't have that luxury of it being with us.

I don't sense a communication failure here. I think we did all we could to get Al back out on the field. It just didn't work out.

This is my point right here.. from his Monday presser.

"Ted and I have been upfront with the process," McCarthy said. Has not talked to Harris yet, but Thompson was trying to get ahold of him.

Been upfront with the process, yet haven't talked to Al before the transaction.. IMO, this conversation should have taken place prior to the press release or Harris running to the media with his version first.

Just the way I have and would handle an employee, talk with them personally if I was the decision maker and his direct report. Have that conversation with a veteran of this nature, then release him.

It is a business, but that doesn't mean it can't be done in a more personal matter. My opinion.

But again.. I have no problem with the Packers making this choice if they felt it was the best for the short and long term success of the Packers roster. Just think you handle veterans of this nature a bit different than the normal waive/release/cut...

Eh, perhaps they could have spoken a little more before. But I still think they gave the dude the complete benefit of the doubt to prove he deserved to be back on the field, which would be more important to me than a slight communication failure.

Also, I'd have to look into the context of the situation more. The decision was apparently just made this morning definitely, and perhaps Ted Thompson just hasn't been able to get a hold of Harris yet, as indicated by MM's quote. I'm sure they will have a meaningful conversation very soon.

Yes, I agree the Packers gave him ample time to make a comeback this season, paying him for a partial season and gave him a fair shake.

But after the PR nightmare of a couple of seasons ago, why not cross all T's, dot all I's and go the extra mile to ensure that Harris understands the decision completely.

Agreed, that maybe more will come out and I could be jumping the gun.. but I would think that we have learned a lesson in dealing with long term veterans in Green Bay a little differently and over communicate rather than under.

Not on a big time rip of the Packers here.. more so just a little concerned that Harris didn't get a personal phone call and completely understand the rational behind the decision.

Probably not a big deal.. just concerned a bit. We need no bad PR in Green Bay.. give the media as little as possible to run the negative angles. Leave that kind of nonsense for the Vikings. 😉

beast (8-Aug) : But the Packers would have to use one for their return from IR spots on him, when they cut down to 53.
beast (8-Aug) : I think the NFL recently changed the IR rules, so maybe the season might not be over for OL Glover.
