League slaps Childress with $35,000 fine

By Mike Florio

We've typed the name "Childress" more times in the past few days than we ever really wanted to type the name "Childress."

And we need to do it again.

Judd Zulgad of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports that the league has fined Childress $35,000, both for criticizing officials afte Sunday's loss to the Packers -- and also for disclosing to the media the league's admission that referee Scott Green erred when overturning via replay a second-quarter touchdown reception by tight end Visanthe Shiancoe.

If the Vikings lose to the Patriots on Sunday, Childress might be able to finance the fine with his buyout.

Communist China would be proud.

Wait, what? So the public isn't supposed to know when the league admits a call was botched?

They've admitted mistakes before, but for some reason this conversation between Childress and the NFL guy was confidential--but Childress blabbed about it anyway. I have no idea why sometimes they admit it publicly and sometimes they don't.

Why again is it against the rules to publicly slam the officials? Why do they get to make fucked up calls and not get publicly blasted for it?

Why don't they get fined for obviously bad calls that even the uninformed viewer can see were wrong?

The worst that happens to them is they are graded down, which reduces their chances of officiating in the postseason. I'm not convinced those consequences carry all that much weight with the officials.

Screwing up a play you can watch on replay is a different issue. However, pretty damn easy for us to sit in our lazy boy and react to the fan/player reaction, watch replays from a plethora of angles, and then have 30 seconds to determine if a play was officiated accurately (all variables that the referees have to discount).

I once was a ref for an 8 year old soccer tournament. I was 14 at the time, yet I had GROWN ADULTS dropping f bombs at me for a botched call for their kids who were more concerned with picking out a wedgie or looking at the clouds than what transpired on the field. I developed a completely new respect for officials at that point.

Every coach hates getting screwed on a call, but almost all of them bite their tongue and suck it up like a man. They do not conduct themselves like Bush League Chilly. I thought the fine was light actually. He talked about it in his presser after the game and then the next day on the whine fest KFAN.

NFL coaches cannot denigrate NFL referees publically period! It is also a tactical miscue to do, cause then they really have motivation to screw you!

Thanks Brad for immediately taking the Viking job and skipping your flight to GB!

I was more referring to calls they make in the replay booth when the angles are obvious and they have time to get it right.

That's one reason I have a hard time going overboard blasting a coach for a challenge or non challenge.

I still think pro sports should have a few people, two or three maybe, watching replays of every play to catch mistakes by the officials. OF course, more detail needs to be thought of, but the concept is what I'm talking about.

The human element to the game is great, but human's make too many mistakes. Good thing is, humans in a booth watching replays can help negate said mistakes.

To make sure I made my point, even though it favored the pack, I think the ref botched the Shiancoe TD, and chilly has every right to be upset about that.

However, calling a PI, hold, or whatever is a bang-bang, split-second decision that even then allows for some discretion of the official. That's really difficult, and I think the NFL and media/fan scrutiny tends to regulate the situation enough.

These guys get it right a lot - I never realized until I saw replay that Randy interfered on that bomb against Collins, or that Harvin had stepped out on his negated TD. Give these guys some credit, and let them be. As much as we've gripped about the officials lately, it seems that calls have evened out, and it hasn't affected the outcomes of games

Martha Careful (17-Nov) : The badgers really need to change the whole offensive scheme. No draws no screens plus the quarterback is marginal

Martha Careful (17-Nov) : chop block
Martha Careful (17-Nov) : there was a very questionable job Block call that upon viewing replay was very borderline
