EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. - Vikings coach Brad Childress was incensed over the officiating in his team's 28-24 loss to the Green Bay Packers, and he likely didn't feel much better after talking to the NFL's vice president of officiating on Monday.

Childress said Carl Johnson, the league's director of officials, admitted that referee Scott Green should not have overturned a touchdown catch by Visanthe Shiancoe in the second quarter after Green Bay challenged the ruling.

Childress said he also was told a touchdown catch by Packers tight end Andrew Quarless in the second quarter would have been overturned had the Vikings challenged it.

Childress, who blasted the officiating in a postgame radio interview with KFAN, clearly was still frustrated by it during his Monday news conference.

"I called (league officials) very early this morning and they said they were disappointed that the call was reversed," Childress said.

Shiancoe made a diving 17-yard catch in the end zone. Part of the ball touched the ground, but Shiancoe maintained control and the officials ruled it a touchdown. Green Bay challenged and the play was reversed.

"It's supposed to be irrefutable evidence," Childress said. "The guy is looking right down on it and says it is a touchdown. You have got to show them something that says it wasn't a touchdown. I saw him control the ball. It's not about forearms. It's not about hands. I was told it was about hands. If he has it in his teeth and it touches the ground and he has it when he comes up, it's a touchdown."

The Vikings had to settle for a field goal, costing them four points - the margin of victory.

"You never know how the game would have turned out after that," Shiancoe said. "That's four points and we did lose by four points. But there's nothing I can do about it now. They're human beings, too. Everybody makes mistakes. But sometimes it can be costly."

A NFL spokesman said conversations between Johnson and teams are confidential and the league does not discuss them. The Vikings were frustrated that the officials overturned a correct call on the field.

"You would think that overturning it had to be indisputable evidence," Shiancoe said. "I was stunned. It was like, 'What's going on here?'"

What the F is the rule anyway. I always thought that it was if the tip of the ball hit the ground, it was still a catch as long as you maintained control.

Wouldn't it make more sense for the rule to just be "if it touches the ground, no catch".

Make a simple rule, that call was nuts though, I was yelling in the bar about how Mike McCarthy is an idiot and just wasted a challenge, I guess - sorry MM, lol.

I've said quite often, ball touches ground, dead ball, period.

NFL has too many rules and needs to be more black and white.

Yes... agreed.. they have made the catch rule way to complicated at this point.. did it move, did he make a secondary football move (most can't even define that) and did he control it for a half hour.. lol.

Seriously.. the ball moved before he hit.. when he hit.. by the standards put forth.. it was incomplete. Even the NFL can't get it correct with the ambiguity of the rule.

Like the Packers have never been screwed on a call.

Can't wait to see what Chilly gets fined this week for his unprofessionalism at the press conferences.

To me the catch was unambiguously a touchdown. I thought it was a dumb challenge when the red flag was thrown, and I still think it was a dumb challenge, even though it happened to work out for us. There was a play later in the game I think Mike McCarthy would have been much better off challenging, but I'm not recalling the exact situation at the moment.

Jennings first down. Then we wouldn't have had to look like jackasses, running the upback on the second consecutive 4th and 1. Have I ever mentioned how predictable our playcalling is?

That sounds familiar. Can you refresh my memory a bit? Was that the play with the questionable spot that denied Jennings a first down? I think you're right -- I think that's the play to which I was referring.

Yes, it was a first down. Jennings caught it but was pushed back by the defender, it look like a first down.

But I don't know if you could challenge forward mementum because doesn't it when the ref blows the whistle? Like isn't it more of a judgment call like pass interference and unchallengable?

Spots can be challenged. I don't know all the intricacies of the rule, however.

On this particular play, I actually thought the official probably had the correct call as well -- it looked to me like he secured possession of the ball after he was pushed back across the first-down marker. However, I still thought it was worth a challenge since it was such a gray area.

One could argue the Kuhn was never down or his forward progress was completely stopped.. he was never down.. and he certainly pushed past the line of scrimmage.
