No, just "throwing money" at a problem doesn't guarentee anything. But it sure makes it alot easier to win if you can "cherry pick" the best players in baseball BECAUSE you are one of the few that can afford it. C.C. Sabathia is a prime example. The Brewers had him for part of a season. He improved the team alot. Then where does he go? To the Yankees. Why? They were the only ones that could afford to "buy" him. They won alot BECAUSE of him.
Had the Brewers been able to keep him, i bet the Brewers record would have been alot better, and i bet the Yankees wouldn't have won the championship.

So saying it doesn't ALWAYS work doesn't disprove that it often DOES work.

I haven't tried to imply (or is it infer) that it never works. If you've read any of my previous posts before today about baseball, you'd know I'm just about the most reluctant Yankees fan you'll ever meet, and I'm no fan of the Steinbrenners. I don't like the fact that they bid on just about everyone. I'm hoping beyond hope that they don't pick up Cliff Lee. I'm not of the mind that if you can't beat him, get him to join you. Do I think there should be some kind of salary cap in MLB? Absolutely, but it's not going to solve all the problems. The Yankees pinned their hopes on three guys last year (which I still have a hard time believing it was by dropping only two players and they still lowered the payroll by close to $9 mil), and it worked. And as for this year, like I said, highest payroll in MLB and they weren't even close to being the best team. That includes regular season and post season. You can't spend a ton of money, throw a bunch of guys together and expect it to work. I don't know how else to say it. I'm not okay with the way they spend money like it's no big deal, but it's a double-edged sword. They have the revenue to be able to shell it out, so what do you do? Sit on it or spend it on players? I'm just glad that I'm not in charge of it. I'm ok with watching from my couch.

I don't think you are dumb, not at all, if you're a Yankees fan. The Yankees are one of a handful of teams that buy up talent at a price other teams can't match. Those teams are using a tool not available for all teams.

I don't like that about baseball and I don't like the Yankees. I'm not a bandwagon fan and quite a few like the Yankees are in my experience. It's not too hard to root for a team that out pays for All Star talent.

I know that all the World Series they've won means I have little to no argument when it comes to baseball and money in baseball. It's just a fact, and my friends like to remind me of that on every possible occasion. What I'm not, however, is a bandwagon fan (I'm not accusing you of calling me one, just want to clarify). Growing up, you had to like the Cubs, Cardinals or the Brewers, and I didn't want to like a team that everyone liked. I had NO idea when I was a 6-7 years old how popular the Yankees were. I basically just chose them because I loved Don Mattingly and I used to watch Home Run derby reruns when Mickey Mantle was on. Like I said, I know I have no room to discuss money and baseball, but it's hard not to stick my nose in to defend my team a little.

I like the old Yankees. Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio (sp) etc ... the stein butter Yankees, i don't like at all.

I tried the other day to name 5 baseball players. I got to three and the 4th guy I named was already retired.

So shows how much I know about baseball.

However, I hate the Yankees. I heard they're not in the World Series this year. Good.
