Most of you know I'm a retired PE teacher. I sub once in awhile at our local school, from lunch room to teacher. Little did I realize I would become a college instructor in retirement. This started in late August.....just haven't put anything in writing until now.
Roger (another retired PE teacher who makes the Energizer Bunny look dead) called me up one day in late August.
"Bob, Roger here."
"No kidding! My caller ID says Sharon Lutz. You don't sound like her."
"Yeah, well anyway, I'm going to be teaching Dr. Miller's HHP 339 class this semester. He's on sabbatical and he asked if you would be willing to help out with me. You know, sort of team teach. There are two sections of his class, on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. 90 minutes each class."
"How much am I going to get paid?" Roger is a wheeler dealer and has conned me into more "volunteer" workshops than I care to remember.
"Well, I'm not sure what the pay is, but it should be pretty good. Besides, you've got all that experience to pass on to these education majors. Teaching them games to play and how to run a gym class."
"Roger, is this the class where the elementary education majors have to take so many hours of PE classes so they can teach it if they happen to be in a school with no regular PE teachers?"
"Right. How many kids have visited your PE classes from Miller's class in the past years? Well, now we get to show them how it's done."
"How much am I getting paid?"
Dead silence.................
"You're not doing this Pro Bono are you?"
"No. I figure at least $100 a day. Look, I need some help. I'm going to be gone for several class days and you invent games in your sleep. The students will love it."
"OK, I'm in. Do I get a title or something? Can the students call me Professor Bob?"
"You get a staff parking pass. I'll let Miller know you're on board. He'll appreciate it."
So, I'm officially an Adjunct Instructor, whatever that is, and have had a blast in the classes. Get to give them their mid-term exam on Tuesday. Good old Blue Book exam. Anybody remember the old Blue Books?
Phone rings yesterday: "Bob, Roger here. Hey, Miller is taking next semester off too. You want to tag team that class again?"
Anyone for a Weenie Roast?
