Colts take different approach with McAfee than Moala

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on October 21, 2010 11:03 AM ET
On September 3, 2010, Colts defensive tackle Fili Moala was arrested for driving while intoxicated. To this point, he's gone unpunished and will go through the normal NFL procedures following alcohol-related violations.

Colts punter Pat McAfee was arrested for swimming in public while intoxicated on Wednesday, and was suspended by the team within 24 hours.

So what is the difference in these two cases? Did McAfee have a prior history with alcohol or did he just get punished more quickly for a lesser offense because he's a punter?

That's one of the questions Bob Kravitz of the Indianapolis Star asks in a piece on Thursday about the McAfee situation. McAfee's crime is easy to have a little fun with because, well, he was found swimming a canal.

(Actual part of the police report. Officer: "How much have you been drinking?" McAfee: "How much have you been drinking? "A lot. Because I am drunk.'')

Beyond the jokes, though, is a serious question about whether the Colts are being fair and/or violating the collective bargaining agreement. They have had four alcohol related incidents in the last year, but they haven't treated them all the same.

Two quick comments:
1. I have to admit I laughed at the bolded bit.
2. Why the heck is "swimming in a public canal while drunk" illegal? Boneheaded, yes. But surely the city of Indianapolis has better things to do with their government resources?
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Because as NSD can attest to, if too many people drown in a body of water while completely shitfaced, people are going to go batshit and assume there's a serial killer not named "intoxication" on the loose killing young men.

I would assume it has more to do with the night part. If I recall he was arrested at night and I'm pretty sure, regardless of how legal it is to swim drunk in the daytime, that if a public place is closed you're trespassing. However I don't know the nature of Indianapolis' canals. I'm more thinking of beaches.

Damn..........picking on us punters again. What else do we get to do anyway? Sit on the bench and look really, really interested, or, go get drunk and go for a swim? I vote for the second choice.

Isn't it LaCrosse that has a problem with drunk college boys turning up dead in the river? There were so many, people were getting suspicious.

I guess it is easier to think your loved one was the victim of a murder than an drunken idiot who passed out in a river.
I want to go out like my Grandpa did. Peacefully in his sleep.
Not screaming in terror like his passengers.

Yep, because then you don't have to face up to the fact you raised a lower utterly lacking in self-control.
