Really, there's no point focusing on any one play though. The Packers were bound to lose this game because they could not protect their QB and the Dolphins could. That was the difference in the game.

Yes, one play does not make the game (although one play can have great significance based upon the circumstances leading up to that particular play), but rather Greg has identified the trend that determined the outcome. As a whole, this loss had very little to do with coaching.

A big part of this loss was that our special teams were more awful than Miami's special teams. It wasn't just the penalty by Francois that allowed the Dolphins to keep the ball--although that was big. There was another bad special teams play later. In overtime, the Dolphins got the ball first and went three-and-out, which should have given the Packers good field position, but because of a decent punt and a Packers penalty (holding by Korey Hall) the Packers lost 56 yards of field position and had to start on their own 16.

But that's the nature of this board: eternal blind optimism and excusism ala the 1980's.

I might agree with you if the Packers were losing as consistently and as badly as they did during most of the 80s. But that's not the case. There are a lot more reasons for hope with the current regime than there were in the 1980s.

Also, there is plenty of criticism of McCarthy on this board. Several "fire the coach" threads have popped up already since the end of this game, and there were one or two last week as well. Personally, I think they are way premature, but it's hard to accuse this board of "eternal blind optimism."

Nothing to do with? Are you kidding me? Who is responsible for knowing the rules? What do we pay a coach to do? He's a part of every play, BECAUSE HE CALLS THE PLAYS! He's the head dude. Who else would you nominate to be responsible for this blatant fuck-up?

I love the fact that the Packers are owned bv the community, but sometimes it irritates me. A responsible single owner would have shipped McCarthey about two years ago.

So you're saying that McCarthy "called" the play for Francois to line up over the center? I don't understand that. That's not something that the coach does. It's a decision by the player. The player screwed up all on his own.

I don't understand your point about ownership either. The Packers have a GM who is in charge of the team, just like most other teams in the league. Community ownership has nothing to do with this.

He calls the play.....but he can't EXECUTE the play. If the O line can't keep the D off Rodgers, that's NOT MM's fault.
If the WR can't get open (which seems the case this year) MM can't stop that. Our guys are playing down to whoever they are playing. Not getting the job done. You can coach, but if the guys don't execute the plays well, what can you do?

Crosby missing what would have been the game winner against Washington.......was that the fault of the coach?
Francois.......he's a rookie. He screwed up. That was a major call at a time when we couldn't afford it.

beast (8-Aug) : It's a new rule, so it's not clear, but my understanding was that they could be IR'd at any time
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : *had to be IRed at 53
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : beast, I thought the designate return from IR players had to be IR at cutdowns to 53, not before
beast (8-Aug) : It's a brand new rule, either last season or this season, prior, all pre-season IRs were done for the season
beast (8-Aug) : But the Packers would have to use one for their return from IR spots on him, when they cut down to 53.
beast (8-Aug) : I think the NFL recently changed the IR rules, so maybe the season might not be over for OL Glover.
Zero2Cool (8-Aug) : Packers star Howton, first NFLPA prez, dies at 95 😔
