I'm not sure why he didn't challenge either the Jordy play or the Kuhn play; both appeared to be TDs to me. Given his knack for being a little loose with the challenges, I thought for sure he'd challenge there. Maybe the prior criticism has gotten to him?

The Jordy one was clearly NOT a touchdown. He was out of bounds. Kuhn was also clearly short of the goal line.

Back to the thread topic, yes in a situation like that I would have always gone for it on 4th and goal. The QB sneak would be my 4th down play (maybe) and not my 3rd down play. I think they should have had Kuhn or Jackson take it over the top on 3rd down.

Our offense was moving at will up to that point of the game. Blame MM for not challenging Nelson getting a TD before getting it at 1st and goal. Blame the O line for getting pushed back multiple times. I don't however think we should blame MM for going for it there.

When I watched the game at 1/4 speed, the Jordy play should have been a TD. That is IF the ball hitting the pylon is a touchdown.

Edit, oh the questions at hand. Umm, go for it. We just had a shitty play call in my opinion you run a bootleg on that every time. If done right you have three options to score even if they know its coming. TE in shallow back, RB in flat or QB running it in.

That's jus from what I've seen us do of course.

Yeah, that 3rd down call was the real crime! QB sneak, are you serious?

You'll like this: McCarthy admitted, in the post-game conference, he was wrong to call that on the third and goal.

And McCarthy, given the circumstances (playing a struggling offense, where the ball was located) was right in going for it. He just needed to call better plays to get us a TD.

I'd go for it here.

I don't even mind the play call.

We really did miss Finley there, though.

Had that pass been thrown a couple of inches further and/or had we had Finley in there on that fade route, it would've been a completion and a TD.

Without Finley, you just can't throw it somewhere in the vicinity of the receiver. It has to be more pinpoint. It's the exact same thing we saw when we tried to force the ball to Finley on fades in 2008.

I did wonder about something. Not trying to be a sore loser, but just looking for an explanation. How does this 'turn-your-head-around-PI' stuff work? The LBer in coverage was clubbering Quarless without ever turning his head around. Something that usually seems to draw flags. At least, it does on deep routes when CBs are involved.

as for the playcall, I get the sense that the coaches periodically want to prove that they can play smashmouth...whether that be due to criticism, to prove it to themselves, to prepare for cold weather games, or whatever. I think there are some valid reasons for that, however, I also agree that providing yourself with multiple options earlier in the downs, in hindsight, seems to make sense.

I was wondering the same thing on that play and another play to Jordy in the endzone where he was trying to run through the defender who never played the ball.

I'm not going to blame the refs...we got lucky on some Woodson PI calls that weren't made, and had 400,000 other opportunities to win this game, but those did appear to be 2 PIs that went against us.

It's hard to say but field goal would have been better.

Edit:We wanted to get some momentum so that's why we went for it.

Someone can add in here, but I remember reading a Lombardi book, and he lost a playoff game exactly like this. Not taking the 3 when he had the chance. He never made that mistake again. Its a tough one I guess; the Skins were on the ropes at that point and a touchdown rammed downn their throat might have taken the fight out of them. Then again, not taking the 3 cost us the game.

Really? Oh, right, we lost by 3 points so the 3 we missed out on in the FIRST QUARTER is directly responsible.

You can't honestly believe your words? The following 3 quarters of missed opportunities had a lot more to do with the loss than the goalline stand.
