Bedard reporting on twitter that Burnett tore his ACL and is gone for the season.

Apparently, he played a few snaps even after the tear. But this is a huge blow to our depth, because despite being a rookie Burnett had been solid for the most part.

Tough loss. We currently have two healthy safties in Collins and Martin. I'm thinking we either move Bush back to safety, or perhaps go after Blackmon if we can resign him this early (recall needing to wait for 10 weeks to do so, but not sure if that is the case).

Morgan Burnett is out for the year with an ACL tear.

Not sure when it happened. (McCarthy) Thinks it happened about two series before he went out of the game.

Burnett was playing well for a rook.. they picked on him with the first Johnson TD... but some of that is expected from a Rookie..

Bigby is hopefully coming back in a couple weeks.. and Martin played solidly.. but it is a hit to our defense.. especially the communication on the back end.. we haven't seen much of an issue back there so far this season. To be fair.. we haven't played a high powered offense yet.. but it seemed better back there.

Sucks.

You make a great point, which is why I brought up Blackmon as a possible replacement.

Bedard has regarded Blackmon amongst the smartest Packers on the roster (or when he was on the roster) and you'd have to think he'd have the ability to make adjustments and delegate assignments pretty well.

Bedard also mentioned that when Blackmon got snaps at Safety in the preseason, he played good enough to compete with Burnett for the starting spot if his health was consistent.

Injuries just make me want to scream. Depth issue on the front 3 and now greater depth issues on the backend. Hoping that we have bleed enough for the season.

Gotta give Blackmon's agent a call. If he's healthy it makes sense.

That's not good news, our defense already, pardon the term... sucks. We do not have a good defense and this just makes matters worse. When you can't stop a team like the Lions from putting up the numbers they did and nobody was able to really get after the QB it's a sign of bad things to come. Hopefully they pull it together though soon because we don't face any great teams for a while

Our defense isn't elite.. but it isn't awful either.. I disagree that it sucks.

The Lions, albeit young, have an offense loaded with talent.. Best is a game changer already out of the backfield.. Johnson is as good as they come as a receiver, the Tight Ends are underrated.. and the line has some very solid cogs.. Hill played well and the offense play calling took advantage of our aggressiveness yesterday..

We have to be aggressive at this point because we are a bit hamstrung with little in terms of depth on defensive line..

But I will agree that losing Burnett doesn't help our defense.. not at all.

Bigby is still a few weeks away.

The bad thing for Burnett will be missing the offseason work.

Hope he is back in time for the start of training camp. It pushes back his career development.

Bad break for a defense that has already been rocked by injuries.

I think we IR'd Blackmon then released him with a injury settlement which means we can't activate him until Week 11, or something to that effect.

When a player is put on IR, it means the team feels they're done for the year and to prevent teams from "stashing" players on IR they have this rule or whatever.

I don't know the specifics of it, I just remember us talking bout it earlier.

Edit, not sure how valid this is but ...

After final cuts Saturday, the Green Bay Packers still are looking for their punt and kickoff returner. Among the moves to reduce their roster from 75 players to the mandatory 53-man limit by 5 p.m. Saturday, the Packers reached an injury settlement with their preferred returner going into training camp, Will Blackmon. The Packers were hoping Blackmon would come back from Oct. 29 knee-reconstruction surgery to reclaim the job but decided that his persistently sore knee would not allow him to make it through the season healthy. He missed almost two weeks of training camp when the knee flared up in early August, and was out again the last week of camp. Paul Lawrence, Blackmon's agent, said the injury settlement will pay Blackmon for "a couple weeks," after which his client can sign with any team but the Packers.

I will go as far as saying the Lions have the best WRs in the NFC. They finally got a decent QB who can hit them. He hit them yesterday, and it was more kudos to the Lions than it was our D looking bad. Put an elite D against those WRs and I think the results would have been the same.

NOBODY could have defended that one TD to Calvin Johnson that was over Woody's head. That was a perfect pass. For perfection, there is no defense. Just like Aaron's TD pass to Finley. Finley was very well covered. You simply cannot defend against perfection.

So we are not an elite D. We're not bad either. I'd put us in the top 10 by the end of the season. Still finding our identity. We got some sick players back there. CM3 will have his 2nd Pro Bowl in his 2nd year. Woody will go to the Hall of Fame. Collins will be a perennial Pro Bowler as well. Jenkins is looking good. Raji is looking good. Just have to have more games together.

I think we should move Woodson to safety when Al gets back. Not another year of watching slow boy Atari try to cover anything out there.

Burnett was good this is an unfortunate loss to the defense. If we can get Bigby in tho the loss wouldn't hurt us that much.

Burnett = Bigby

They are both equal, all tho Burnett is a rookie he gets the edge.

Who will be better next year? I'd have to go with Burnett considering his experience, him knowing the game speed the playbook as a 2nd year but for this year they are at the same level.
