To be fair, no team has been dominant; it's asking too much of any team to be firing on all cylinders this early in the season.

You could argue that, for example, the Chargers completely destroyed the Cards this week. That is true, but they also got outplayed for most of the game against Kansas City in week 1 and lost.

Similarly, the Packers lost to lesser opponents last week, but beat the meat out of the Bills - who the very next week gave New England a run for their money.

It's the NFL; it is rare to see a team continuously dominate week in week out. Yes there are concerns with McCarthy's team: Special Teams and Penalties chief among them. He showed this week that he can fix penalties, and that should say something about his ability to correct the mistakes of his team because he did it with a short week this week.

Another huge positive is that, while he has not won many "big games" (whatever those may be) rarely has his team looked completely over-matched. You have to credit him for that, for having his roster ready to play despite it being the youngest for the past few years.

McCarthy, for all his flaws, is a good coach. He has coached his team to victory in more than a couple of games where their backs were against the wall. He clearly has the respect and ear of his players.

It is far, far too early to say that McCarthy does not have what it takes to bring the Lombardi trophy back home. Yes, he certainly has his flaws. But he has also done some pretty good things, too, during his tenure here.

+1 to AADP and Greg C.

but lots of other teams have found people to be at least average on special teams. I'm sure the right people, whether it be coaches, or players we need to find these guys.

Cribbs returns a punt so we envy Cleveland's return game, Coughlin wins a super bowl, so he must be able to win every big game, right?!?

As AADP said, virutally every team has been hot and cold, hell look at the packers and their penalty situation. I'm not eccstatic with how the team has looked, but none the less THE PACKERS are the envy of many preseason favorites (e.g. San Fran, Dallas, MN...) and though plagued with miscues, many of those are quite correctable.

Well the play that I think about when you say he doesn't make gutsy calls is the onside kick against the Cardinals in the playoffs.

I don't think he's the coach we need to seal the deal, but I loved that kick against the Cardinals. I literally stood up and said :xcensoredx: McCarthy!

You guys should read Mcginn's article in the JS today. Raises this same question, and it's incredibly telling once you look at the stats/numbers.

I would comment on the subject, but I think I have :horse: long enough.

All I will say that the fickle nature of some fans, after a WIN, is nothing short of appalling. It was amazing after the Tampa Bay loss last year how many people wanted him out, only to completely change their tune 8 weeks later.

At least I have been a consistent in my opinions of McCarthy win or loss and I will continue to be until he brings the Lombardi Trophy home.

I read it.

He makes valid points.

But seems to overlook the games where the Packers beat the Bills this year, where the Packers beat the Seahawks last season, and the final game where they thoroughly whipped the Cards in the final game of the season. He also mostly neglects the context when Sherman was the coach with much more veteran roster with established O-line still playing at a high level versus McCarthy who has basically had to work with mostly youngsters and an o-line whose bookend Tackles have gotten old fast.

The concerns presented in his article are fair, and MM's record against playoff competition is poor to say the least. Yet not all is doom and gloom, or at least not as much as McGinn portrays in article.

I guess my point with the special teams is that there isn't even a threat of our returner taking to the house, but there sure as heck is a threat of them taking it back on us.

Outside of last week, the Special Teams coverage units have been okay. Granted they have not been special outside of the first seven quarters of the season, but they held up okay today.

The punting and fumbles on Kick returns are problems (the latter only emerging this week). For what it is worth, I do not believe that Jordy Nelson can show himself to be a real threat to return kicks 40-50 yards one week, and then three weeks later be so incapable of returning punts 25 yards.

Translation: Jordy, at 25 years old, is not going to get old overnight. He also cannot be a consistent threat to return punts when the guys in front of him are not doing much that resembles blocking and creating lanes to run through.
