Weekly Waddle: Nice to see accountability
By TOM WADDLE Shaw Suburban Media

Funny things are happening at Halas Hall these days.

No, Im not talking about the unexpected 3-0 start. Even the most optimistic of us Bears fans couldnt have predicted wins over the Cowboys AND Packers.

Accountability is the new buzzword at Bears headquarters, and forgive me for being mildly surprised. This is a team that has historically played favorites based on draft status. How else can you explain the presence of Mark Anderson on the roster and Alex Brown in a Saints uniform. Money? Theres no salary cap this year.

Im not nave. As a former undrafted free agent, I know draft picks usually get preferential treatment. Not so much anymore.

These days, if you arent delivering, youre sitting. Ask cornerback Zack Bowman. He wasnt at his best early Monday night and Lovie quickly yanked him in favor of Tim Jennings, who made the most of his opportunity and played a fantastic game.

When offensive tackle Kevin Shaffer struggled early, rookie JaMarcus Webb got a quick look. Wide receiver Devin Aromoshadu still is paying the price for playing poorly in the opener.

I applaud the change in philosophy. After all, the best players should play, shouldnt they?

Then theres the curious case of defensive tackle Tommie Harris. He was dressed in civvies and standing next to Aromoshadu on Monday. I immediately suspected an injury, or maybe he broke a team rule and was being disciplined. Both were rational conclusions considering Harris history.

It was more than a little surprising when Smith said that he dressed the best 45 players against the Packers. Harris a healthy scratch? How can a $10-million-a-year, former Pro Bowler not be one of your top 45 guys?

With all due respect, youre telling me Marcus Harrison and Matt Toeaina give you the best chance to win? Thats exactly what Lovie was telling all of us. This wasnt a message sent, as weve been down that road with Harris before.

Finally, the Bears coaches had enough of Tommie freelancing and not producing. And again, I applaud the move. If hes not getting the job done, bring me someone else, regardless of where that guy was drafted and how much hes making.

Ill take it a step further: If Smith and defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli have concluded that Harris isnt one of their top four defensive tackles, theres no reason to keep him around. I dont consider Harris a malcontent, but I also dont believe he will sit quietly. Any distraction is a bad one, especially when you have the makings of a special season.

While Im on my soapbox and waxing philosophical, let me also suggest the Bears think long and hard about what to do with offensive tackle Chris Williams when hes healthy.

Hypothetically, lets say Frank Omiyale handles the left tackle spot nicely. Lets say the film shows hes more than holding his own and actually is better on the left than Williams.

Lets also assume that Williams, as many Ive talked to have suggested, is best suited to play right tackle. Again, this is hypothetical, but if it turns out to be true, why not keep Omiyale on the left and send Williams back to the right side?

I understand he was a top 15 pick and was supposed to be the left tackle of the future, but if he isnt the best guy for the job, shouldnt he face the same fate that Aromoshadu and Bowman faced?

As for Sunday night, remember last week, when I told you that the Bears were catching the Packers at the right time? Coming off a big win over the Cowboys, at home, on Monday night?

Well, Im going with the same logic this week, only its working against our guys.

Theyre coming off two huge, emotional wins. Theyre working on a short week and theyre on the road. The Giants are coming off back-to-back disasters. At 1-2, they are in desperate need of a win. They have a ton of talent on both sides of the ball, but consistently have found ways to foul things up.

This game could be the key to the Giants season. The Bears are due for a bit of a let down. Im not diving off the bandwagon, just stopping for refueling.

Pick: Giants 23, Bears 20.

Has been a very interesting year for Lovie and the rest of the coaches. A lot of things seem different from top to bottom. But maybe that's when you have three former head coaches on the coaching roster. Lovie definetely knew this was the year of years for him to try and keep his job. Curious to see how it all plays out, this story of the 2010 Bears has just begun.

Martha Careful (21h) : thank you Mucky for sticking up for me
Martha Careful (21h) : some of those people are smarter than you zero. However Pete Carroll is not
Mucky Tundra (24-Jan) : Rude!
beast (24-Jan) : Martha? 😋
Zero2Cool (24-Jan) : Raiders hired someone from the elderly home.
dfosterf (24-Jan) : I'm going with a combination of the two.
beast (24-Jan) : Either the Cowboys have no idea what they're doing, or they're targeting their former OC, currently the Eagles OC
Zero2Cool (23-Jan) : Fake news. Cowboys say no
Zero2Cool (23-Jan) : Mystery candidate in the Cowboys head coaching search believed to be Packers ST Coordinator Rich Bisaccia.
beast (23-Jan) : Also why do both NYC teams have absolutely horrible OL for over a decade?
beast (23-Jan) : I wonder why the Jets always hire defensive coaches to be head coach
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Still HC positions available out there. I wonder if Hafley pops up for one
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Trent Baalke is out as the Jaguars GM.
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Jeff Hafley would have been a better choice, fortunately they don't know that. Someone will figure that out next off season
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Aaron Glenn Planning To Take Jets HC Job
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Martha- C'est mon boulot! 😁
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Thank you
wpr (22-Jan) : Z, glad you are feeling better.
wpr (22-Jan) : My son and D-I-L work for UM. It's a way to pick on them.
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Thank you. I rarely get sick, and even more rarely sick to the point I can't work.
wpr (22-Jan) : Beast- back to yesterday, I CAN say OSU your have been Michigan IF the odds of making the playoffs were more urgent.
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Glad to hear you are feeling a bit better.
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : I've been near death ill last several days, finally feel less dead and site issues.
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : It is a big deal. This host is having issues. It's frustrating.
Martha Careful (22-Jan) : just kidding...it was down
Martha Careful (22-Jan) : you were blocked yesterday, due to a a recalcitrant demeanor yesterday in the penalty box for a recalcitrant demeanor
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Was that site shutdown on your end or mine? No big deal, just curious
beast (21-Jan) : That way teams like Indiana and SMU don't make the conference championships by simply avoiding all the other good teams in their own confere
beast (21-Jan) : Also, with these "Super Conferences" instead of a single conference champion, have 4 teams make a Conference playoffs.
beast (21-Jan) : Also in college football, is a bye week a good or bad thing?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : The tournament format was fine. Seeding could use some work.
beast (21-Jan) : You can't assume Ohio State would of won the Michigan game...
beast (21-Jan) : Rankings were 1) Oregon 2) Georgia 3) Texas 4) Penn State 5) Notre Dame 6) Ohio State, none of the rest mattered
wpr (21-Jan) : Texas, ND and OSU would have been fighting for the final 2 slots.
wpr (21-Jan) : Oregon and Georgia were locks. Without the luxury of extra playoff berths, Ohios St would have been more focused on Michigan game.
wpr (21-Jan) : Zero, no. If there were only 4 teams Ohio State would have been one of them. Boise St and ASU would not have been selected.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : So that was 7 vs 8, that means in BCS they never would made it?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : A great game. Give ND credit for coming back, although I am please with the outcome.
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : FG to make it academic
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : and there's the dagger
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooo 8 point game with 4 minutes to go!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooooooohhhhhh he missed!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Ooooo that completion makes things VERY interesting
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Game not over yet
beast (21-Jan) : Oh yeah, Georgia starting quarterback season ending elbow injury
beast (21-Jan) : Sadly something happened to Georgia... they should be playing in this game against Ohio State
beast (21-Jan) : I thought Ohio State and Texas were both better than Notre Dame & Penn State
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame getting rolled
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : Ohio State just got punched in the gut. Lets see how they respond
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame vs the Luckeyes, bleh
