I just hope he's not juicing like his old USC teammate. You know, the one who's a really muscular linebacker and dominated opposing offensive lines all of last year.

I remember Peter King throwing that idea out there shortly after he was drafted, because of how quickly Matthews added muscle mass during his college years. Nothing ever came of it, but I did think of Clay when Cushing got nailed.

It burns me up every time someone assumes steroids because a man has put on muscle rapidly. Matthews went from 160 to, what, 220 in college? That's a gain of barely 15 pounds a year. And that's if you believe the media hype; according to Matthews himself, he weighed about 200 as a freshman. I gained 30 pounds last year in about three months. It's not that hard to do. I gained 10 pounds in the last month, five of which came in a single week. There is no reason why he couldn't have gained 15 pounds a year without steroids. World renowned strength coach Bill Starr was known for putting 40 pounds of muscle on his students in six months or less, and there are records of men gaining up to 100 pounds in a single year.

Hard training + tons of calories = rapid muscle gains

Great post. Not to mention Clay was at an age where his body was growing and filling out naturally anyway.

Whom the hell is assuming he is on roids?

But one can hardly deny that being he was close friends with Cushing, went to school with Cushing, and followed a similar path as Cushing.. that it is a fair concern that it is a possibility.

Not a fact, but a valid concern with the landscape of sports as we know it today..

So why would that burn your ass?

BTW.. I would be more concerned with HGH vs roids.. one is testable the other.. well. 😉

I didn't say he HAS to be on steroids.

The rapid growth thing, especially in college, does not incriminate you in itself. My post stemmed from 3 things:
1) Cushing used PEDs

2) There were rumors even before the draft that Clay used PEDs, but didn't fail the drug test, so those rumors were false

3) He's so fucking good I can't believe it.

I don't give two shits if football players are on roids. If we were worried about ethics we would have to consider things like officials overlooking things on the field and gambling's influence on the game.

Let's get real here, the players cheat and will put anything into their that allow them to continue to play. Anybody think Favre is drug free, including roids and narcotics for the pain. The NFL drug policy is laughable.

If Clay ever gets busted for roids, will anyone be surprised? For now, let's just enjoy the case of whoop ass he brings to the field with him.

Yeah, they use a lot of substances to enhance their game nothing to be done to that.

And really, the issue on steroids, at least for me, is not from a moral standpoint. It's from a "get suspended for 4 games" standpoint.

I'm a huge cycling fan and have always stood by Lance because even if he was juicing, his main rivals (Ullrich, Vinokorov, Basso) have all been busted. It's an odd, unethical logic, but I look at it as a level playing field.

Like you say, if word came out about Clay juicing, no surprise here, and because the policy is a joke, he's obviously not the only one guilty. He's kicking ass, so I'll just enjoy that.
