Number of tackles. One of the most meaningless stats in football. If you are an ILB or MLB for any team for most of the season, you will have a lot of tackles. You may have even more tackles if you play on a bad defense, because you will spend more time on the field. Number of tackles doesn't tell you anything about whether the tackles were made in the backfield or ten yards past the line of scrimmage. Or maybe you are getting more tackles because you're weak and opposing teams are running the ball at you, or because you can't cover so they keep throwing the ball to your guy. That stat just doesn't tell you much at all.

Having said that, I will say that I think Nick Barnett is a very good player. Not one of our best, but just a notch below. A good tackler, good blitzer, decent in coverage, and a good leader.

That's about where I'm at Greg. He was my wife and my favorite defender in 2003 (his rookie year) and today, he's a solid ILB. Not a Pro Bowler, but solid.

You cannot have Pro Bowlers in every position. Thus, solid is really good.

No one in this league is going to pay Hawk $10 million next year, so I am fairly confident Ted Thompson will announce a deal some time in the offseason.

Yeah, the $10 million is a bit of a red herring. As you say, nobody is going to pay it.

By the end of the season, I think we will have a pretty good idea whether Ted will make a strong push to sign Hawk to a new contract. He's a good player, but he might be a better fit with some other team. If so, they'll offer him more money than Ted does, and he'll be gone.

So, Barnett for Lynch, straight up?

He also said he would rather play in Green Bay. But if he was traded to a team that wanted him to play full time, he would be open to it. It was all taken out of context.

AJ and Laura are also having a baby and may be buying a house with a nursery instead of guest quarters. Just a thought.

Maybe you were not listening clearly. I said, they might want a house with a nursery instead of guest quarters. If the guest quarters are isolated from the Master Bedroom Suite, it would be a crappy place to put an infant. In my house, which is not all that big, all the guest rooms are on the opposite end of the house from the Master Suite.

Maybe they have open staircases that would be dangerous for a baby. It is not about having room for a kid. It is about changing your lifestyle to more kid appropriate.

Hell no.

Why get rid of our franchise MLB for a RB that would be a 1-year fix?

Barnett is too much of a leader on this defense for us to get rid of him.

There's no chance Barnett's name will be brought up.
But if he can be had for Hawk, or a late round pick i'd give it a shot.

Hawk will basically be let go after the season, so we won't receive any comp picks or trade value, and I still believe Lynch can bring his career back to life.
He's only 24 and was drafted that high for a reason, we all know GB is a great place to tame people with off field issues, and I believe Lynch has been on record saying he would like to play in GB. Plus we looked hard at him in the draft but didn't get the chance for him to slide.

With only an unproven and fragile B jack, and a career fullback, if we seriously want to be a SB contender Marshawn might be a key piece to taking us there. I have serious doubts that Jackson can handle 200 plus carries and stay healthy or effective. And let's be honest, Kuhn is good that the odd 8 yard bash, but he certainly isn't going to keep a defense off of Arod, and brings 0 chance at breaking a long one.

But hey what do I know? I'm just a fan.

I'm not convinced that Green Bay is a great place to tame players with off-field issues. Mostly, the Packers have avoided acquiring players like that. Andre Rison played for the Packers for about a month, and I heard that his behavior was so bad that Holmgren almost held him out of the lineup for the Super Bowl. Koren Robinson played here for a year. I can't think of any others.

Yes, he has a lot of tackles, but do not most teams have an ILB with about 100 tackles?

"Wade" wrote:

11 out of 32

NFL.com shows (even thought tackles aren't a stat) 12 ILB had over 100 tackles from 11 different teams and Barnett was one of them. That was for '09.

ER....I'm confused as to where you are looking, Kevin.

I looked here: nfl.com tackles page

By my count, in 2009 regular season, Barnett ranked 17th among NFL ILB/MLB in unassisted tackles (which, I think, is what the "total" column represents). And 21st in total of tackles and assists (the "comb" column).

I'm not sure this is evidence for anything beyond a claim that Barnett is, well, about average for inside backers.

More ILB/MLB stats for you: (all from the same place at NFL.com)

Barnett
17th in "total" with 82
21st in "comb" with 105

#32 in "total": Bart Scott, AJ Hawk, and Andra Davis, each with 60.
#32 in "comb": , Hunter Hillemeyer with 90

"Wade" wrote:

Maybe you're confused because you said ILB, but now you're throwing in MLB's as well. Pretty convenient.

Edit, I didn't post the numbers to say Nick was elite. I think he's an above average LB who should make more impact plays than he does.
