Bush says he is forfeiting his Heisman Trophy

METAIRIE, La. -- Reggie Bush says he is forfeiting his Heisman Trophy.

Bush issued the following statement on the New Orleans Saints' website:

One of the greatest honors of my life was winning the Heisman Trophy in 2005. For me, it was a dream come true.

But I know that the Heisman is not mine alone. Far from it. I know that my victory was made possible by the discipline and hard work of my teammates, the steady guidance of my coaches, the inspiration of the fans, and the unconditional love of my family and friends. And I know that any young man fortunate enough to win the Heisman enters into a family of sorts. Each individual carries the legacy of the award and each one is entrusted with its good name.

It is for these reasons that I have made the difficult decision to forfeit my title as Heisman winner of 2005. The persistent media speculation regarding allegations dating back to my years at USC has been both painful and distracting. In no way should the storm around these allegations reflect in any way on the dignity of this award, nor on any other institutions or individuals. Nor should it distract from outstanding performances and hard-earned achievements either in the past, present or future.

For the rest of my days, I will continue to strive to demonstrate through my actions and words that I was deserving of the confidence placed in me by the Heisman Trophy Trust. I would like to begin in this effort by turning a negative situation into a positive one by working with the Trustees to establish an educational program which will assist student-athletes and their families avoid some of the mistakes that I made. I am determined to view this event as an opportunity to help others and to advance the values and mission of the Heisman Trophy Trust.

I will forever appreciate the honor bestowed upon me as a winner of the Heisman. While this decision is heart-breaking, I find solace in knowing that the award was made possible by the support and love of so many. Those are gifts that can never be taken away.

It's nice to see that at least lawyers still know how to write reasonably well. 😉

No way Bush wrote this. This sounds just like corporate PR.

Mention the dreams/goals.

Mention how only through hard work you can get those dreams/goals and only the best of the best make them.

Gloss over the mistake you made.

Then thank a bunch of people.

Bush didn't write this, folks.

I swear to god, I've heard about enough negative remarks about people with the last name of Bush to last me a lifetime. 2000-2008 got me used to rolling my eyes whenever someone was ranting about a Bush.

LOL Porforis!!! I know what you mean!
Anyway.....i don't know all the details of what Reggie did. But i would imagine most college guys take SOME things that they maybe shouldn't.

Heck....he's got a Super Bowl ring. Let them have their Heisman.

Haha Porforis.

Yeah, Reggie Bush is a tool. The knew he made a mistake years ago. Then the NCAA began their investigations.. Bush still didn't do anything. The NCAA fined and penalized USC.. Bush still didn't do anything. Only when the Heisman Trust began debating taking away his Trophy did Bush do something.

Meanwhile, he stood idly by as the NCAA threw the book at USC.

This is the equivalent of an employee who knows he's about to get the ax resigning so that he won't have a firing on his record.

I haven't been following this story closely, so Bush's statement looked pretty good when I first read it. But after reading everyone's negative comments in this thread, I read the statement again, and it didn't look quite so good. There is no apology, he blames "media speculation" rather than his own actions for the need to surrender the award, and he makes a play for sympathy by using the words "painful" and "heartbreaking" in reference to himself. Yes, it is a classic non-apology from a public figure who is wrapped up in his own ego.

He took money and bribes and all that other crap, but that doesn't matter.

He won the Heisman because he was good. He didn't cheat. USC may have, but not Bush.

Bush won because he was the best player that year, and nobody can take that away from him.

One.. taking cash didn't have an effect upon how Bush did upon the field.

Two.. Shame on the Heisman Trust for buckling upon the media pressure and more than likely forcing this eventually.. yet refusing to address the stain another winner has associated with the award.

Three.. Vacate it and move on. IMO, Vince won it that year with the bowl game, but currently that is not part of the process.. so looking back now is a biased 20/20 hindsight view.

Four.. Learn from this event, and change two things.

A) Wait until all Bowl games are finalized then vote upon the Award.

B) All finalist need to sign some type of agreement that they haven't broken any current NCAA rule and thus a automatic vacated award or investigate the candidates before the vote and live with the process.

Five.. People are slapping at Bush, but the reality is I would bet the more college athletes have broken the same rules than not in some fashion.. just are smart enough to cover their tracks better than Bush's parents.. the reason for getting caught in the first place.
