First, IMO, it is the texting/IM that is accelerating the death of proper grammar in this country.

And I am sure that there are kids in this country, especially in the larger populous schools with poor teacher to student ratios that texting type communication is the primary source of their language skills.

That doesn't even note the noticeable decline in the quality of the teachers that are teaching our youth. At least at the Junior High level.. when a teacher basically turns the class over to the computer to do the teaching.. something is wrong with the depth of the teacher themselves.

Anyway.. it isn't that I don't think that we should hold our fellow posters accountable.

It is how that message is communicated, especially when it is levied 40% of the time in a thread or via a personal attack demeaning the other member.

Additionally, the same standards should be expected from all, even if it is their "thing" to use poor capitalization, sentence structure, use of slang or even text speak.

But that leads to where does it end and how much of the forum is dedicated to proper grammar. Is it okay to destroy the flow of thread after thread with the correction, mentions or attacks?

IMO, a segregated thread such as this might be in order laying out the expectations in the structure of posts.

But again, then don't allow any individualism with their "things".

Such as non use of capitalization and slang.

Or using a vocabulary that forces posters to search the definition of the word, because I definitely would have to believe that would slow down the read for the reader.

Or even the excessive use of ellipses.. because damn I love to use them. 😉

gimme a friggin' break here. are you honestly telling me my lack of capitalization makes my posts hard to follow? ever read The Road? did my James Joyce reference go over your head? if an author is obviously literate, understands grammar and employs the use of proper sentence structure they are undeniably given the liberty to do with text as they please (and are often rewarded as being innovative for doing so).

now, i'm not saying i'm being "innovative" here. my "thing" came from the days of the old BBS bulletin boards. it started simply as a brevity thing; then i became recognizable because of it. "oh, here's the guy who always writes in lower case" etc. after so much time it just became, yes, "my thing" and while many have commented on it over the years not a single person has ever expressed having a problem with my posts because of it.

right now, the only reason you have my number is because you don't like my "internet personality" or the way i addressed fin88 the other night.

big deal.

I wasn't trying to single you out.. the broad point that I was trying to illustrate is that if we are going to blast away at one poster for grammar, then damn it blast them all.

Including me and my nuances.

Capitalization apparently is important to more than I.. so why should it get a free pass over misspelling?

But if you took offense I apologize, but your subjective use of certain terms meant no offense I am sure.

big deal

Apparently it is, since you brought it back to light above. 😉

well that was anticlimactic. you selected the most trite part of my post to quote and address?

I never had an issue with your lack of capitalization, and never noted it except for these last couple illustrative points.

Basically.. why single out and belittle one for grammar when flaws can be found in almost every damn post upon the board, intentional because of their "things" or unintentionally through error?

Hell if speed of the read is all that matters because you don't have time for mistakes, then what in the hell are you doing here with your limited much demanded time?

see, you're still not really grasping or at the least addressing my initial point. not to mention that it isn't "grammar" necessarily that is at stake here. a lack of punctuation and constant spelling errors make things nigh impossible for me to read without suffering brain damage myself. i just can't cope with it. it depresses me as a native speaker of the language to see grown men who don't know the difference between "our" or "are" or "matters" and "madders". i realize we're not ALL English majors here, which is why you could go through my entire post history without finding much in the way of "grammar policing". yes, i understand the internet is a different playground. there are time constraints. we're not writing for an audience who is set to judge us for much other than the content of our conversations. so most of the time i glide right past it. i couldn't care less about internet abbreviations (and even the constant blundering of "your" and "you're" doesn't kick my nuts that hard).

but when you combine a lack of punctuation, a lack of grammatical adherence or understanding and a lack of the ability to spell simple words? i'm sorry. it just flipped my top.

Hell if speed of the read is all that matters because you don't have time for mistakes, then what in the hell are you doing here with your limited much demanded time?

So you know your subject of your wrath the other night is a high school kid?

Fact is we have a number of different origins and age groups of posters upon the board.

And I didn't miss your point, just that I am apparently more tolerant than you.

But for reference.. your last paragraph is somewhat difficult to read without capitalization.. but out of respect to you, I certainly wouldn't blast you repeatedly and in a demeaning fashion time and time again. I would just get to the point of ignoring what you have to say and move on.

And seriously, that is one difficult paragraph without capitalization to I.

i'm not really seeing it as any easier to read, but i respect that you might. i can't really argue that...though as i've said, you're the first since 1995 to express it (at the least).

But that is the point, I actually enjoy the majority of your input and your "thang" doesn't bother me to the point of not reading it.

I overlook the annoyances, accept them and try my best not to disrespect because of them. But I certainly have the personal option of not reading it all together.

There.. I think we both have hammered this subject into the deep abyss of repetition and boredom.

Do we continue to pull the pistols at 20 paces or can we let it go an move on?
